The Thomasmarkt in Vechta

The Thomasmarkt is one of the traditional autumn fairs of the district seat and continues a market tradition that is centuries old. The city of Vechta organises it as an event for all generations in late autumn. From Friday, October 23, to Sunday, October 25, 2026, the town centre becomes one large fairground: rides on the central squares, market stalls in the pedestrian zone, children's carousels, snack stands and a shooting gallery.

A large flea market runs along the side streets.

The high point of the festival weekend is the big light and music fireworks show, choreographed pyrotechnics set to music. On Sunday, October 25, the shops are open: the town centre's retailers add special offers to the market.

Admission to the grounds is free, including on Saturday, 24-25 October 2026. Rides, food and drinks cost whatever the vendors charge. Drivers take the A1 to the Vechta exit, and trains stop at Vechta station; the car parks of the town centre provide parking. The city lists further information at vechta.de.

From Nordhorn to Lüneburg

Sunday, October 25, belongs to the runners. At the Oldenburg Marathon the field starts in Edewecht in the Ammerland, the finish is on the Schlossplatz in Oldenburg, and the distances are 5, 10, 21 and 42 kilometres. It is the closing stage of the 16th Öffentliche Laufserie.

The Braunschweiger Lauftage draw around 2,000 runners to Braunschweig, with 5 kilometres around the Bürgerpark, 10 kilometres around the Südsee and a half marathon through the town centre. Every finisher receives a medal.

The Nordhorner Herbstkirmes runs on the Neumarkt in Nordhorn from Friday, October 23, to Tuesday, October 27, daily from 2 pm to 11 pm. Carousels, roller coasters and a Ferris wheel are on site, and on Sunday, October 25, the town centre's shops are open. The VVV-Stadt- und Citymarketing Nordhorn organises the fair.

Pumpkin and potato are the stars of the Pumpkin and Potato Festival at the International Mill Museum in Gifhorn, on Saturday and Sunday. Local producers and cooks show specialities from potato pancakes to pumpkin soup, children carve pumpkins, and the mills are in operation. Admission follows the museum rate, and parking at the museum is free.

The Winterzauber am Bergström in Lüneburg opens on Sunday, October 25, on the terraces of the Hotel Bergström and stays open until January 10, 2027. A light tunnel, pink mulled wine and cranberry punch mark the market, fire bowls and seating stand by the water, and admission is free.
