First winter market of the season in Lüneburg — from the end of October at the Bergström Hotel until January
While the classic Lüneburg Christmas markets don't open until November 19th, the Winterzauber am Bergström begins at the end of October. With this unusually early start — which is not primarily Christmas-themed but rather winter-themed — the format has established itself as an independent prelude to the Lüneburg winter season. The organizer is the Hotel Bergström, one of the most renowned hotels in the Hanseatic city, which offers an extraordinary setting with its terraces by the water. Lüneburg Marketing GmbH includes the market in the overview of the Christmas City Lüneburg.
The trademark of the Winterzauber is the light tunnel — a passage of thousands of lights and fairy lights that has become one of the most popular photo spots of the Lüneburg winter season. The staging by the water, with reflections of the lights, cozy seating areas around fire bowls, and an atmospherically lit outdoor area, creates its own mood beyond the classic Christmas market folklore. Those who want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the large Advent markets at Markt and Am Sande will find a more intimate alternative here.
The gastronomic offerings set their own accents. Instead of classic red mulled wine, there is pink mulled wine made from rosé wine. The menu is complemented by cranberry punch, hot chocolate in various variations, apple-cinnamon drinks, non-alcoholic punches, and winter cocktails. For food, there are soups, sausages, vegetarian specialties, and sweet variations such as crêpes or marshmallows for roasting yourself at the fire.
With its long season, the Winterzauber am Bergström also bridges the time after Christmas when the classic Advent markets have long since closed. The stalls, light tunnel, and fire pits remain open until mid-January 2027 — a meeting point for the people of Lüneburg seeking atmosphere on dark January days, and for winter tourists from the Hamburg region.
With a season of almost three months, the Winterzauber am Bergström is Lüneburg's longest-running winter market format. Three phases can be distinguished: From October 25th to November 19th, the market runs as a pure winter staging without a classic Christmas theme. From November 19th to December 24th, it complements the city center's extensive Advent offerings as part of the Christmas City. From December 26th to January 10th, it bridges the time after Christmas when the classic markets have long since closed and the city longs for meeting points in the January days.
The exact program for individual special days in 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
