The Internationale Hofer Filmtage

The Internationale Hofer Filmtage show about 130 feature, documentary and short films every autumn in the Upper Franconian city of Hof, among them many world and German premieres. The 60th edition runs from October 20 to 25, 2026. The festival was founded in 1967.

The filmmaker Wim Wenders once spoke of the "Home of Films". Many of today's well-known directors showed their first films in Hof.

The festival sees itself as a showcase for new voices in German and international cinema. Screenings take place in several cinemas across the city. Even after established cinemas closed, pop-up venues keep the programme going, carried by a large team of volunteers. VR experiences, retrospectives and masterclasses are part of it, as are endowed prizes such as the Förderpreis Neues Deutsches Kino and the Friedrich-Baur-Preis.

Cinema tickets are sold on site, and a streaming offer on the HoF on Demand platform runs until shortly after the festival. Sunday, October 25, is the last festival day.

Jazz, runs and markets across the rest of Bavaria

On Saturday, October 24, NUEJAZZ begins in Nuremberg and runs until November 15. Since 2012 it has been the most important platform for contemporary jazz in Middle Franconia, and in 2024 it received the German Jazz Prize as "Festival of the Year". NUEJAZZ Festival plays in venues such as the Kulturwerkstatt auf AEG, the Z-Bau and the E-Werk. Single tickets cost 30 to 50 euros, and the jam sessions are free.

Waischenfeld in the Franconian Switzerland celebrates twice over: the Wiesent-Challenge reaches its 5th edition on Sunday, and its organiser, SV Bavaria Waischenfeld, has existed for 80 years. The programme has a 10 km road race, a 12 km panorama trail with the Upper Franconian trail championships and a 1 km kids' run. The after-run party starts at 2 p.m., with a small sports expo alongside.

On Mariahilfplatz in Munich, the Auer Kirchweihdult ends on Sunday with about 250 stalls, a historic Ferris wheel from 1925 and free entry; the stalls are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. In Altötting, the Tillymarkt winds through the town centre from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with about 200 stalls, and the shops open from 1 p.m. Wolnzach also has a shopping Sunday: at the Simon-Judä-Dult, traders fill the Marktplatz and the Mariaplatz, and a hop gourmet market joins them.
