Upper Franconian Autumn Fair in the old gold mining town
The Gronicher Herbstkerwa — in dialect "Gronich" for Goldkronach — is one of the most traditional autumn Kirchweihen (church consecration festivals) in the northern Fichtelgebirge. On Sunday, October 25, 2026, the market square of the historic mining town in the Bayreuth district will be transformed into an Upper Franconian festival site with a Sunday opening for shopping, an autumn market, culinary delights, and a festive atmosphere. Goldkronach, with its approximately 3,700 inhabitants, is located in the northern Fichtelgebirge in the state of Bavaria and boasts a gold mining tradition spanning over 600 years — Alexander von Humboldt briefly worked here as chief mine superintendent.
The Herbstkerwa combines a traditional festival and city marketing: The Sunday opening for shopping, with the town center's shops open, expands the classic Kirchweih atmosphere with shopping and experience opportunities. Regional exhibitors — bakeries, confectioneries, breweries, beekeepers, pizzerias, grills — will present autumn specialties at the market square. Traditional Kerwa dishes will be served at the SpVgg sports club and the SKV bowling alley restaurant: Krenfleisch (beef with horseradish), Sauerbraten (marinated pot roast), Siedwürste (boiled sausages) with Sauerkraut — typical Upper Franconian autumn cuisine.
Goldkronach celebrates two Kirchweihen per year: the spring Kerwa in June and the autumn Kerwa at the end of October. The autumn Kerwa traditionally coincides with the harvest festival and the preparations for the Advent season. Traditional elements such as a festive church service in the Evangelical Lutheran parish church and dance evenings by local clubs complement the public program at the market square and in the surrounding restaurants.
Goldkronach is one of the oldest mining towns in Upper Franconia. Gold was panned and mined in the Goldkronach valley as early as the Middle Ages; the town received its city rights in the 14th century. Today, the Gold Mining Museum, guided tours of the mine shafts, and gold panning experiences bear witness to its former importance. The town is located at the transition from the Frankenwald to the Fichtelgebirge in the Bayreuth district, Upper Franconia administrative region. The Herbstkerwa on the market square, alongside the spring Kerwa, is the most important urban festival date.
The 2026 Herbstkerwa will transform Goldkronach's market square into an Upper Franconian festival site with an autumn market, Sunday opening for shopping, and culinary offerings. Regional exhibitors — bakeries, confectioneries, breweries (e.g., Becher-Bräu), beekeepers, and pizzerias — will present their products. The shops in the town center will be open, so the Sunday opening for shopping expands the classic Kerwa experience with shopping opportunities.
Upper Franconian autumn classics dominate the culinary scene: Krenfleisch, Sauerbraten, or Siedwürste with Sauerkraut will be served at the SpVgg Goldkronach sports club. The SKV bowling alley restaurant also offers Kerwa dishes. Accompanying the festivities, a festive church service in the Evangelical Lutheran parish church and dance evenings by local clubs shape the traditional program.
