One of Germany's most important film festivals
The International Hofer Film Days were founded in 1967 and are among Germany's most traditional and important film festivals. Over the decades, they have become a fixture for filmmakers, producers, distributors, and journalists – a stage where many now-famous directors showed their first films.
Annually, around 130 feature films, documentaries, and short films are screened in several cinemas in the city, complemented by VR experiences and a streaming offer via the HoF on Demand platform. The festival sees itself as a discovery festival: it focuses on new voices in German and international cinema and awards numerous endowed prizes, including the New German Cinema Sponsorship Award and the Friedrich-Baur-Prize.
During the festival days, Hof transforms into a meeting point for the industry. The festival is supported by a large team of volunteers who ensure the festival operations continue with pop-up venues, even after the closure of established cinemas. Accredited guests and the public experience premieres, retrospectives, and masterclasses.
Hof is an independent city in the state of Bavaria, in the extreme northeast of Upper Franconia, near the border with Saxony and Thuringia. The Hofer Film Days have made the city known beyond the region and are its cultural flagship.
From October 20 to 25, 2026, the International Hofer Film Days will celebrate their 60th edition – a significant anniversary for the festival founded in 1967. The Film Days will be held as a hybrid event: on-site screenings in Hof's cinemas as well as a subsequent streaming offer via HoF on Demand until November 1, 2026 (transactional video-on-demand, exclusively in Germany, for accredited industry professionals).
Around 130 feature films, documentaries, and short films are expected, with numerous premieres. Films can be submitted by July 31, 2026, at the latest. The detailed program will be published shortly before the festival begins.
