About Hofer Filmtage

Since 1967, the International Hofer Film Days have been among Germany's most renowned film festivals. Every autumn, around 130 feature films, documentaries, and short films are screened in the Upper Franconian city of Hof – including numerous world and German premieres. The festival is considered a discovery platform for young talent and a meeting point for the German film scene; it's no wonder filmmaker Wim Wenders once called it the "Home of Films". In 2026, the festival will celebrate a significant anniversary with its 60th edition.

Since 1967, the "Home of Films"

The International Hofer Film Days were founded in 1967 and are among Germany's most traditional and important film festivals. Over the decades, they have become a fixture for filmmakers, producers, distributors, and journalists – a stage where many now-famous directors showed their first films.

Program and Profile

Annually, around 130 feature films, documentaries, and short films are screened in several cinemas in the city, complemented by VR experiences and a streaming offer via the HoF on Demand platform. The festival sees itself as a discovery festival: it focuses on new voices in German and international cinema and awards numerous endowed prizes, including the New German Cinema Sponsorship Award and the Friedrich-Baur-Prize.

A City in Film Fever

During the festival days, Hof transforms into a meeting point for the industry. The festival is supported by a large team of volunteers who ensure the festival operations continue with pop-up venues, even after the closure of established cinemas. Accredited guests and the public experience premieres, retrospectives, and masterclasses.

Location in Upper Franconia

Hof is an independent city in the state of Bavaria, in the extreme northeast of Upper Franconia, near the border with Saxony and Thuringia. The Hofer Film Days have made the city known beyond the region and are its cultural flagship.
