Church music festival with 20 events for the organ anniversary
The Church Music Festival "650 Years of Organs in Hof" marks an extraordinary anniversary. Organ music has been documented in Hof since 1376 – at that time, Franciscan and Poor Clare convents were active there. This makes Hof one of the oldest documented organ locations in Franconia and Bavaria, alongside Nuremberg and Eichstätt.
From May to October 2026, City and Deanery Cantor Dr. Ludger Stühlmeyer invites you to 20 events focused on the organ. The festival opens on May 3rd at 10 AM in St. Marien with a Choral Mass, featuring a historic 12th-century musical manuscript, restored and transcribed by Dr. Barbara Stühlmeyer.
Accompanying the festival, the exhibition "Wood, Metal, Wind, and Heavenly Sounds – 650 Years of Organs in Hof" will be shown. It highlights the long history of organ music in the city and vividly illustrates the instrument's significance for Hof's cultural heritage.
Hof is an independent city in the Bavarian administrative region of Upper Franconia, located on the edge of the Fichtelgebirge mountains near the border with Saxony and Thuringia. The city's long tradition of church music – with St. Marien as the central venue – makes the organ anniversary a cultural highlight for the entire Hochfranken region.
