One of Europe's largest improvisation theatre festivals
The Improtheaterfestival Würzburg is one of the most significant gatherings of the international improvisation theatre scene in Europe. Improvisation theatre is created without a script: scenes, characters, and entire stories are invented in the moment, often at the audience's suggestion. This very unrepeatability is what makes the festival so appealing – no two evenings are the same.
Every October, the festival presents between eight and twelve shows on various Würzburg cultural stages. The programme consists of innovative show formats submitted by ensembles from around the world, as well as the festival's own productions featuring international guests. The range extends from long-form narrative theatre and musical improvisation to pointed short formats.
In addition to the evening shows, the festival also serves as a training platform: multi-day intensive workshops, lasting around twelve hours, teach players techniques at different levels, led by internationally recognised tutors. Places are in high demand and are allocated by lottery.
Würzburg is an independent university city on the Main River in the German state of Bavaria, and the administrative seat of the Lower Franconia region. With its Residenz palace, Marienberg Fortress, and a vibrant student culture, the city provides a fitting backdrop for a festival whose venues – from the youth cultural centre Cairo to stages in the city centre – are easily accessible on foot or by public transport.
The 2026 edition is confirmed with dates and programme structure on the official festival website. The main venue and meeting point is the Jugendkulturhaus Cairo on Fred-Joseph-Platz; the evening shows are spread across other Würzburg cultural stages, accessible on foot or by public transport.
The workshops begin on Friday, October 23, at 2 PM and conclude on Sunday, October 25, at 2 PM. The shows are primarily held on October 23 and 24 in 45- or 90-minute slots. Selected ensembles apply with their own formats; the festival supplements them with productions featuring international guests.
Three intensive workshops at different levels with internationally renowned tutors; allocated by lottery. Programme and tickets: improtheaterfestival.de.
Würzburg Hauptbahnhof is an ICE high-speed train stop; from the station, city centre venues are reachable on foot or by tram. By car, take the A 3 or A 7 motorways. The central meeting point is the Jugendkulturhaus Cairo, Fred-Joseph-Platz 3.
Show tickets in advance cost €9.50 (concessions €7.50) plus booking fee, at the box office €11.50 (concessions €9.50). Workshops are subject to a fee and are allocated separately by lottery.
