55th edition of the Bavarian Volksfest in the Donaumoos with Ferris wheel, festival tent, and regional specialties
The Donaumoosvolksfest in Karlshuld celebrates its 55th edition in 2026. Since the early 1970s, it has become a firm highlight in the event calendar of the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district – a typical Bavarian Volksfest, nestled in the unique landscape of the Donaumoos, Bavaria's largest former lowland moor.
For five festival days, the Karlshuld festival grounds transform into a classic fairground. Classics like the Ferris wheel with views over the Donaumoos, dodgems, the "Gaudi-Hupferl" swing, and traditional game stalls delight families from the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district and neighboring regions.
Culinary delights at the Volksfest focus on regional specialties: freshly baked Rahmflecken, specialties from the Kartoffelhütte, the popular Allgäuer Seelen, as well as ice cream, sweets, and classic Volksfest fare. The large festival tent forms the heart of the event: live music, refreshments served in Maßkrugs (liter beer mugs), and dance evenings shape the atmosphere. A Buidlhütte – Bavarian for photo booth – provides fun souvenir photos.
The Volksfest traditionally begins with a festive beer tapping ceremony. Table reservations for the festival tent are recommended: in 2026, they will take place on Wednesday, April 29, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Those who want to secure a table – perhaps for a family evening or a club meeting – should reserve in advance.
Karlshuld is located in the Donaumoos, the flat, once marshy lowland moor between Ingolstadt and Neuburg an der Donau. The municipality, with around 7,000 inhabitants, owes its existence to the Bavarian moor colonization of the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, it is a center of agricultural activities and the venue for traditional Volksfests. The Donaumoosvolksfest reflects this history: a festival that combines tradition, family culture, and Bavarian hospitality.
