The most traditional festival of the Ottheinrichstadt on the Danube
The Neuburg Volksfest looks back on a history dating back to its founding year of 1934, making it the oldest surviving festival in the Ottheinrichstadt Neuburg an der Donau. Over more than seven decades, it has developed into the most important Volksfest (popular festival) in the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district in the state of Bavaria. The City of Neuburg an der Donau, through its public order office, is the organizer.
The venue is the festival grounds in the Ostend district of Neuburg an der Donau. As the festival's appeal extends far beyond the city, it is considered the defining Volksfest for the region by the surrounding communities of the district — including Karlskron, Rohrenfels, Weichering, Ehekirchen, Oberhausen, Bergheim, and Rennertshofen.
In old tradition, it opens with a joint concert, beer tapping, traditional costume dances, and a star march of the bands at Schrannenplatz. A large parade proceeds along Grünauer Straße to the festival grounds in the Ostend, where the official opening with a reception of queens and beer tapping by the mayor takes place.
The ten-day festival offers a varied programme with new attractions and indispensable classics: a parade on the opening day, a traditional contest on the first Sunday, fireworks on Wednesday evening, a vintage car meeting on the second Sunday, as well as a senior citizens' afternoon, a family day, and a flea market. Fairground rides, the festival tent, and Bavarian catering complete the picture.
With its long history and its firm place in the summer calendar, the Neuburg Volksfest is an identity-shaping event for the Ottheinrichstadt and a magnet for visitors from the entire Upper Bavarian Danube region.
