Three Dulten a Year — The Kirchweih Closes the Series
The Auer Dult is one of Bavaria's oldest market events. A Jakobidult was first held at St.-Jakobs-Platz in 1310. In 1796, the then-independent village of Au received official market rights. Since then, three Dulten have taken place annually on Mariahilfplatz: Maidult (late April/early May), Jakobidult (late July/early August), and Kirchweihdult (mid-October). The Kirchweihdult is the autumn version with a similar assortment but a noticeably cozier atmosphere.
What to Expect
Around 250 stalls present a unique range of goods in Southern Germany:
- Dishes, porcelain, ceramics, and pottery
- Household goods, pans, pots, brushes
- Antiques and collectibles
- Wickerwork, felt slippers, curtains
- Spices, jams, and autumn specialties
- Clothing, jewelry, books
Rides and Bavarian Delicacies
Families can enjoy rides on the historic Ferris wheel from 1925, the chain carousel, and the bumper cars, while younger children will delight in the Punch and Judy show. Reduced prices apply to rides on Family Tuesday. For food, you'll find 'Steckerlfisch' (grilled fish on a stick), roast chicken, cheese specialties, fresh 'Schupfnudeln' (potato noodles), candied almonds, and mulled wine as the October air cools.
Music in Mariahilfkirche
To accompany the Dult, Mariahilfkirche offers an organ music program at 3:00 PM on Dult Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays. On Dult Saturdays, evening concerts are also held around 7:15 PM — a lovely contemplative addition to the market bustle outside.
