About Jakobidult

The Jakobidult is the summer edition of the traditional Auer Dult – one of Munich's oldest markets and its most characteristic Volksfest-market mix. For nine days, around 250 market stalls transform Mariahilfplatz in the Au district into a strolling market with household goods, antiques, toys, traditional costumes, crockery (the Munich landmark assortment), farmhouse furniture, and vintage treasures. In between, there are amusement rides, shooting galleries, beer gardens with fried fish and Steckerlhendl. Free admission. Tradition since 1310.

Munich's Oldest Market

The Auer Dult is one of Munich's oldest folk festivals and markets – the tradition dates back to 1310, when the first Jakobidult was held at the former St. Jakobs-Platz in the city center. Since the 18th century, the Dult has taken place at Mariahilfplatz in the Au district – a former working-class neighborhood south of the Isar. The Dult opens its gates three times a year: the Maidult at the end of April / beginning of May, the Jakobidult at the end of July / beginning of August, and the Kirchweihdult in mid-/late October.

Market Character Instead of Volksfest

Unlike the Wiesn, the Auer Dult is not a classic Volksfest, but a market with a folk festival character. Around 250 market stalls offer an exceptionally wide range of goods: household items, antiques, basketry, toys, curtains, spices, jams, traditional costume accessories, kitchen gadgets, from vegetable peelers to freshly sharpened knives. The crockery section with porcelain, stoneware, and ceramics is legendary – many Munich residents buy their household goods at the Dult.

Antiques, Farmhouse Furniture, and Vintage

A separate area of the Dult is dedicated to antiques and farmhouse furniture. Vintage lovers will find old chests, farmhouse cabinets, tableware from grandmother's time, and rare curiosities here. Treasure hunters arrive at 8 a.m. when the stalls open to secure the best pieces.

Amusement Rides and Gastronomy

Classic amusement rides are lined up between the market stalls: bumper cars, chain carousel, Ferris wheel, wave flyer – nothing spectacular, but family-friendly and with Munich charm. The gastronomy is provided by a few, but traditional beer gardens – the Hendl specialties (roast chicken, Steckerlfisch), cheese specialties, and sweet pastries characterize the culinary Auer Dult experience.

Family-Friendly – Family Days on Tuesdays

Tuesdays are Family Days with reduced carousel prices. Free drinking water fountains are distributed throughout the grounds; guided experience tours with tastings and Ferris wheel tickets are offered. Admission to the Dult is free.

Au – A District with Identity

Mariahilfplatz in the Au district is located directly south of the Isar, at the Auer Mühlbach bridge. The pilgrimage church of Maria Hilf in der Au (neo-Gothic, 19th century) forms the backdrop. The district has retained its distinct character between its past as a working-class quarter and its present-day gentrified residential area – and the Dult is its central symbol of identity.

Jakobidult — edition 2026

The Jakobidult 2026 runs from July 25 to August 2 at Mariahilfplatz in the Au district. Nine days of the summer edition of the Auer Dult: 250 market stalls with antiques, farmhouse furniture, crockery, traditional costume accessories, plus amusement rides, beer gardens, and fried fish. Free admission. Tuesday is Family Day with reduced carousel prices.
