Solstice Tradition by the Mühlteich

The Summer Solstice is, in many parts of Germany, a traditional occasion for village festivals with bonfires — a symbol of the sun's victory over darkness, before the nights begin to grow shorter again. Großneuhausen — a small municipality in the Sömmerda district in central Thuringia — keeps this tradition alive. The Volunteer Fire Brigade organizes the Sonnwendfest (Solstice Festival) every year on the Saturday around the Summer Solstice by the Mühlteich, the village pond located in a small park on the outskirts of town.

Bonfire and Sociability

The program is simple and traditional: setup and admission in the late afternoon, bratwurst and steaks from the fire brigade's grill, beer, soft drinks, wine. As darkness falls (around 10:00 PM in mid-June), the bonfire is lit and burns until midnight or beyond. Live music, often with a small cover band or a DJ set, sometimes just amplified music from the fire brigade. The atmosphere is familial, childlike, and community-oriented — regulars know each other, newcomers are welcomed.

Großneuhausen in the Sömmerda Region

Großneuhausen is a very small municipality in the Sömmerda district — a few hundred inhabitants, situated between the district town of Sömmerda and the Goldene Aue region. The Kölleda administrative collective coordinates administrative tasks. The region is predominantly agricultural, with vast fields and scattered villages. The Sonnwendfest is the highlight of the local fire brigade's annual calendar.
