Traditional Schützenfest in the Sömmerdaer Land — July 3–5, 2026
Kleinneuhausen is a small municipality in the Sömmerda district, in the north of Thuringia. It belongs to the Kölleda administrative district and is located in the Sömmerdaer Land — an agriculturally characterized plain between Erfurt and the Saale river. With its few hundred inhabitants, the village is small, but the club culture is vibrant: the shooting club, sports club, fire department, and local heritage association jointly organize the most important village events. The Schützenfest on the first weekend of July is the undisputed highlight of the year.
Schützenfeste (shooting festivals) have centuries-old traditions in Thuringia, as in many other German states. Shooting clubs evolved from medieval Schützengilden (shooting guilds) — civic associations that originally had defense tasks and today cultivate sport shooting. The annual Schützenfest with the Königsschießen (King's Shoot) is the most important club event: the most accurate shooter is crowned King or Queen, a royal court parades through the village, and the festival lasts for three days.
The Schützenfest Kleinneuhausen follows the classic structure: Friday evening festival opening with beer tapping and first dance night; Saturday main program with the King's Shoot, festive parade through the village, and a grand dance night; Sunday morning pint, family program, and crowning of the new shooting majesties. Local bands play in the Festzelt (festival tent), and the club's kitchen serves Bratwurst, roast pork, and draft beer. Children have their own activities — game stations, bouncy castle, children's king's shoot with a light rifle.
Kleinneuhausen administratively belongs to the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Kölleda (Kölleda administrative district), an association of several municipalities in the Sömmerda district. The region between Sömmerda and Kölleda is characterized by agriculture: wheat fields, sugar beets, corn. Here lies the Sömmerdaer Land — a region that rarely appears in supra-regional media but boasts a lively club tradition. Anyone who wants to experience an authentic piece of Central German village culture — far from the festival industry, with genuine shooting traditions, a festive parade, and a dance night in the festival tent — will find it at the Schützenfest Kleinneuhausen.
The 2026 dates are confirmed by the event calendar of the Kölleda administrative district. The Schützenfest Kleinneuhausen follows the classic three-day structure of Thuringian shooting festivals, with the King's Shoot on Saturday morning as the central sporting highlight and the crowning of the new majesty on Sunday as the festive conclusion.
