Traditional district fair in the Warndt — four days of rides, bratwurst, and a fiery finale
Ludweiler is one of the largest districts of Völklingen (Regionalverband Saarbrücken) and is located in the Warndt, a wooded region directly on the French border. Shaped by mining and the steel industry, Ludweiler is a down-to-earth Saarland community with a strong network of clubs and associations — and a Kirmes (fair) that becomes a must-attend event every September.
The Ludweiler Kirmes traditionally runs from Saturday to Tuesday — four days during which Friedrich-Ebert-Platz becomes the festival grounds:
The Ludweiler Kirmes is a classic Saarland district festival — not a huge Volksfest (folk festival) like the Neunkirchen Kirmes weekend, but personal, child-friendly, and strongly influenced by the club and fire brigade culture of the Warndt. The distribution of Kirmes trees by the youth fire brigade on the opening day is a custom that shows: the community itself makes this festival happen.
The Warndt is located directly on the French border (Grossbliederstroff, Forbach, Sarreguemines are direct neighbours) and has a turbulent history: mining, structural change, reforestation, German-French coexistence. For those with more time, during the day you can visit the Warndt pond, hike on the nearby Geisberg, or take a detour to the industrially romantic Völklingen city centre with the UNESCO World Heritage Völklinger Hütte — 15 minutes away by car.
Classic fair program: dodgems, chair-o-planes, strongman game, shooting gallery, candy floss, almonds, candied peanuts, Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), bratwurst, and Lyoner sausage specialties. Beer from Karlsberg (from nearby Homburg), along with local specialties from Saarland bakeries. Free admission, family program deliberately kept affordable.
The format of the Ludweiler Kirmes has remained largely stable for decades. In 2026, the city of Völklingen will again organize the four-day folk festival in cooperation with local clubs. Opening on Saturday with barrel tapping and Quetschekuche, main fair day on Sunday, children's day on Monday, and a conclusion with fireworks on Tuesday.
The exact date and program for 2026 will likely be announced by the city of Völklingen in the summer of 2026 via voelklingen.de.
