Ludweiler — the Warndt on the edge of the industrial city
Ludweiler is one of the largest districts of Völklingen (Regionalverband Saarbrücken) and is located in the Warndt, a wooded region directly on the French border. Shaped by mining and the steel industry, Ludweiler is a down-to-earth Saarland community with a strong network of clubs and associations — and a Kirmes (fair) that becomes a must-attend event every September.
Four days of events
The Ludweiler Kirmes traditionally runs from Saturday to Tuesday — four days during which Friedrich-Ebert-Platz becomes the festival grounds:
- Saturday — 10:00 AM: Distribution of traditional Kirmes trees by the Ludweiler Youth Fire Brigade, accompanied by brass music. 5:00 PM: Official opening with barrel tapping on Friedrich-Ebert-Platz, including free beer and Quetschekuche (a plum cake from the Palatinate region).
- Sunday — the main fair day with all rides fully operational, club stands, and the traditional visit from the district council in the afternoon.
- Monday — Children's day with Clown Ludwinkus (balloon animals from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM) and free face painting.
- Tuesday — Family finale with free carousel rides, ice cream, and popcorn for the two Ludweiler kindergartens. Evening highlight: the grand fireworks display around 9:45 PM, funded by donations from showmen, local businesses, and district council members.
Saarland Kirmes tradition
The Ludweiler Kirmes is a classic Saarland district festival — not a huge Volksfest (folk festival) like the Neunkirchen Kirmes weekend, but personal, child-friendly, and strongly influenced by the club and fire brigade culture of the Warndt. The distribution of Kirmes trees by the youth fire brigade on the opening day is a custom that shows: the community itself makes this festival happen.
Warndt — Border region with history
The Warndt is located directly on the French border (Grossbliederstroff, Forbach, Sarreguemines are direct neighbours) and has a turbulent history: mining, structural change, reforestation, German-French coexistence. For those with more time, during the day you can visit the Warndt pond, hike on the nearby Geisberg, or take a detour to the industrially romantic Völklingen city centre with the UNESCO World Heritage Völklinger Hütte — 15 minutes away by car.
What to expect
Classic fair program: dodgems, chair-o-planes, strongman game, shooting gallery, candy floss, almonds, candied peanuts, Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), bratwurst, and Lyoner sausage specialties. Beer from Karlsberg (from nearby Homburg), along with local specialties from Saarland bakeries. Free admission, family program deliberately kept affordable.
