A Day for Biodiversity

The international Day for Biodiversity reminds us every year how endangered the biological diversity of our planet is. Osnabrück Zoo uses this date for its own special event – the Species Protection Day – which puts the topic at the center of the zoo visit. In 2026, it will take place on June 28, as part of the 90th-anniversary year of Osnabrück Zoo.

The Zoo's Educational Mission

Modern zoos see themselves as educational institutions for biodiversity. Osnabrück Zoo is committed to numerous activities:

• Conservation breeding programs for endangered species
• Financial support for conservation projects in their areas of origin
• Research collaborations with universities
• Environmental education for schools and families

Species Protection Day Program

The day is divided into several program lines:

Information Events

• Keeper tours with a species protection focus at various enclosures
• Lectures by zoo biologists on current projects
• Information stands of partner conservation projects

Hands-on Activities for Children and Families

• Quiz stations on biological diversity
• Craft activities with natural materials
• Scavenger hunts through the zoo
• Hands-on stations to explore furs, feathers, and bones

Focus Species 2026

Changing focus each year. Based on experience, the focus in 2026 will be on the Asian elephants, the chimpanzees, and local biodiversity. The zoo will publish the final topic selection in spring.

Admission Included in Zoo Ticket

The Species Protection Day is accessible free of charge with the regular zoo ticket. Family tickets and reduced admission for children, students, and severely disabled persons are available.
