Altötting — Pilgrimage Town and Market Tradition
Altötting is one of the most important pilgrimage centers in Bavaria and Central Europe (Black Madonna in the Chapel of Grace, around 1 million pilgrims annually). However, this small district town is also a traditional market town. The Tilly Market is named after Johann T'Serclaes von Tilly, the imperial general of the Thirty Years' War, who is buried in the collegiate church of St. Philippus and Jakobus in Altötting — Tillyplatz and Tillymarkt are urban and cultural tributes to this historical connection.
The Market
With around 200 stalls, the Tilly Market is one of the largest autumn fairs in the Inn-Salzach region. The market mile stretches through the center: Neuöttinger Straße → Kapellplatz → Tillyplatz → Burghauser Straße / Bahnhofstraße. A classic fair assortment is sold — traditional costumes, household goods, crafts, regional food, sweets, toys, seasonal goods for autumn and winter.
Sunday Shopping
What makes the Tilly Market a day trip magnet: The market is traditionally combined with Sunday shopping. While the market stalls open at 10:00 AM, the Altötting shops join in from 1:00 PM — fashion, shoes, bookstores, souvenir and devotional item shops around the Chapel of Grace. The city fills with visitors from the entire region on this Sunday.
Inn-Salzach Tourism
Altötting is located in the Inn-Salzach tourism region, along with Burghausen (with the longest castle in Europe), Mühldorf, and Neuötting. The Tilly Market is part of an annual cycle with other markets and festivals — such as the Altötting Hofdult in May/June and the Christmas Market in Advent. Those who want to experience Altötting on a typical weekend will find the Tilly Market to be the ideal format.
