Spring's Beginning in the Murr Region

The Backnanger Tulpenfrühling is one of Württemberg's most beautiful spring spectacles—and at the same time a clever city marketing format: thousands of tulips are distributed throughout the city center, all shops open on Sundays, local nurseries exhibit their spring flowers, and all of Backnang celebrates the end of winter with a Sunday shopping event. Stadtmarketing Backnang has been coordinating the event for years; the municipality in the Rems-Murr district (around 38,000 inhabitants) uses the festival to position the city center as a shopping and experience destination against the surrounding shopping centers.

Thousands of Tulips Distributed Throughout the City

The focus is on the tulip—a familiar symbol of spring for botanists and garden enthusiasts. The city nursery and participating shops plant thousands of tulips in prepared beds, boxes, and containers along Marktplatz, Schulstraße, Sulzbacher Straße, and around the town hall weeks before the festival. On the festival day itself, the city center shines in the colors red, yellow, orange, pink, and white—a display that stretches across the urban space and is featured in countless spring photos of the region.

60+ Exhibitors and 100+ Shops

The organizers count over 60 exhibitors annually—from regional nurseries and florists to artisans, beekeepers, and manufacturers, as well as social initiatives and clubs. In parallel, over 100 Backnang shops open their doors on Sunday from 1 PM to 6 PM for the shopping day. The gastronomy takes advantage of the spring temperatures to set up outdoor seating and encourage visitors to linger. The weekly market at Marktplatz complements the offerings with regional producers.

Free Public Transport and Stadtgalerie Exhibition

A special detail: the City of Backnang provides free public transport in Backnang and the surrounding area on Tulpenfrühling—meaning city buses and regional buses within the fare zone are usable for free on this Sunday. A clear signal to leave the car at home, a contribution to traffic tranquility in the city center. In parallel, the Stadtgalerie presents a themed exhibition—typically on spring, garden art, or regional landscape painting. Hands-on activities for children, performances by local clubs, and a stage program round off the experience.
