Organic wine festival next to Schloss Saaleck in Hammelburg on the Franconian Saale — three days of wine, electronic music, house, and summer vibes
Hammelburg in the district of Bad Kissingen is considered the oldest wine town in Franconia — the first documentary mention of viticulture dates back to the year 777. The Saale valley, with its calcareous shell limestone soils and south-facing slopes, offers excellent conditions for Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, and Bacchus. Schloss Saaleck towers over the town — and just below it, on the southern slope, lies the winery of the same name.
Weingut Schloss Saaleck is one of the organic wineries in Franconia. Classic Franconian grape varieties (Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus), no conventional plant protection, organically certified cultivation. The winery uses the historic architecture of the castle courtyard as a venue — wine pavilion, wine cellar, inner courtyard. This is exactly where the in-house wine festival takes place once a year — on the last weekend of May.
Unlike most Franconian wine festivals, the Weinfest Schloss Saaleck consciously focuses on electronic music instead of brass bands or folk dancing. The program: Friday from 5 PM — House Music at the wine pavilion, gentle start. Saturday from 3 PM — House Music/Techno with the DJ collective Mystery Forest at the wine cellar, plus sparkling wine tasting at special conditions from 5-6 PM. Sunday from 11 AM — relaxed breakfast finale with regional specialties. This mix attracts a younger audience that is not typically found at conventional wine festivals.
The winery emphasizes its vegetarian and vegan food offerings: regionally baked bread, farmer's cheese, vegan spreads, regionally selected sausages. Cocktails and, of course, the estate's own organic wines are the main focus. The concept is aimed at guests who want to experience wine as a pleasure without the classic festival catering atmosphere.
The winery operates a shuttle bus service from Weihertorplatz (central bus station) in Hammelburg to Weingut Saaleck — a service detail that is not a given, making travel without a private car easier and simultaneously defusing the alcohol limit issue.
The 2026 edition is confirmed on the official website of Weingut Schloss Saaleck. The festival is an established in-house event and is considered a deliberately alternative take on the classic wine village format within the younger Franconian wine scene.
Mystery Forest is a well-established DJ collective in the region focusing on House/Techno with a penchant for open-air locations at castles and wineries; Saturday afternoon at the Saaleck wine cellar is regularly the busiest part of the three-day festival.
