Open Sunday with over 80 market stalls in the heart of Backnang
The Backnang Goose Market is one of the established events in the autumn calendar of the Rems-Murr district in Baden-Württemberg. Every year on the last Sunday in October, specialty shops, craftspeople, and market vendors open up the Backnang city center for a major day of experience for several hours. Colorfully painted wooden geese adorn shop windows, entrances, and squares — symbols of a market that owes its name to a historic Backnang goose ordinance.
More than 80 exhibitors are spread along the market street, at the market square, and in the surrounding alleys of the old town. You'll find arts and crafts, jewelry, fashion, regional products, and culinary specialties — from local fruit juice to spicy cheese from Hohenlohe. At the Goose Fountain, the central meeting point, real geese observe the activity, forming the backdrop for souvenir photos.
Backnang's shops open their doors on the Goose Market Sunday — from bookstores to outdoor outfitters to bakeries. Associations, dance groups, and music ensembles perform on action stages, with programs ranging from Swabian brass music to pop cover bands. For children, there are carousels, hands-on activities, and face-painting booths in the pedestrian zone.
Of course, goose is a must: several restaurateurs serve up autumnal goose dishes — from the classic St. Martin's goose to goose liver variations. In addition, there are Swabian classics like Maultaschen, Zwiebelrostbraten (roast beef with onions), and freshly baked yeast rings, accompanied by mulled wine and Federweißer (young wine) from the Remstal valley.
The market's name commemorates an old Backnang goose ordinance that regulated the keeping and selling of geese in the city. The symbolism of the goose continues to be visible throughout the city today: painted wooden geese at the shops and the Goose Fountain are its most visible signs.
The 2026 edition continues the decades-long tradition: on a Sunday in late autumn, the market street becomes a vibrant showcase for Backnang's trade, crafts, and gastronomy. Open Sunday, colorful wooden geese at every entrance, live music on the stages — the Goose Market is more than a market, it's a city festival.
Over 80 exhibitors, from bakers with hand-shaped yeast rings to craftspeople with turned wooden geese. Culinarily, St. Martin's goose, Maultaschen, Federweißer, and mulled wine are the focus. Stage music, a children's carousel, and a face-painting booth complete the family program.
Admission to the Goose Market is free. Payment is only made at the market and gastronomy stalls. Parking in Backnang's public parking garages is subject to a fee (flat rate EUR 4–6), but reduced on Sundays.
Backnang is located about 30 kilometers northeast of Stuttgart and is directly accessible by S-Bahn line S3 from Stuttgart Main Station in about 40 minutes. From Backnang station, it's a 10-minute walk to the city center. By car, take the B 14 or the A 81 (exit Mundelsheim, then B 14).
Admission to the Goose Market is free. Only the products from the stalls and restaurants are charged. Shops are open for business on Sunday from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Children will find carousels, hands-on activities, face painting, and activity booths from local associations. Toilets are available in several cafés and restaurants along the market street.
