Advent market on the first weekend of Advent around the town tower
The Backnang Christmas Market has taken place annually on the first weekend of Advent since 1983 and is one of the more charming Advent markets in the Rems-Murr district. The organizer is the City of Backnang with its festival office. The market consciously sees itself as a family meeting place — supported by numerous local associations, schools, church communities, and hobby artists.
The market area extends from the Stiftskirche church and the Gänsebrunnen fountain along the entire Marktstraße down to the historic Stiftshof. The medieval town tower — Backnang's landmark — forms the visual center. The approximately 80 stalls offer a wide range of products: arts and crafts, jewelry, woodwork, Christmas decorations, Advent wreaths, honey, regional specialties, mulled wine (Glühwein), punch, bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), crêpes, waffles, and candied almonds.
The actual highlight is the Waldbühne in Stiftshof: A wintry, rustic stage made of fir branches, straw, and wood shavings, evoking a hut atmosphere. School choirs, brass choirs, music associations, kindergarten groups, and soloists perform Advent songs, brass music, and contemplative pieces here. The stage program runs throughout the market day and gives the Backnang Christmas Market its unmistakable contemplative soundscape.
With around 38,000 inhabitants, Backnang is the largest town in the Rems-Murr district (state of Baden-Württemberg) and the administrative seat and central hub for the northern region. The historic old town with its Stiftskirche church, town tower, and half-timbered houses provides an atmospheric backdrop for the Christmas market — just a few steps from the train station and easily accessible from Stuttgart, Schwäbisch Hall, and the Swabian Forest.
On Saturday, November 28, and Sunday, November 29, 2026, the Backnang city center will once again open its gates for the traditional Christmas market. The festival office of the City of Backnang, in coordination with local associations, schools, and hobby artists, organizes the setup of around 80 stalls along Marktstraße.
The Stiftshof once again hosts the distinctive Waldbühne — straw, fir branches, and wood shavings create a wintry natural backdrop where school choirs, brass choirs, and music associations perform. Catering stalls around the Gänsebrunnen provide mulled wine, punch, Swabian specialties, and sweet temptations.
Details and the full stage program will be published on the city's website before the market.
