Pumpkin festival and witches' school at the charcoal farm
The pumpkin festival at the Wiethagen forestry and charcoal-burners' farm takes place on Sunday 25 October. The farm sits on the southern edge of the Rostocker Heide, within the city limits of Rostock. Its tar-burning works has been producing since 1837, and with its fully working historic kiln it is the only site of its kind in Germany.
Children bring a pumpkin as their ticket and carve it on the spot. Tools and instructions are available at the farm, and bringing your own is allowed too.
Anyone who wants to can enter the witches' school. Tests of courage await, and at the end comes a witch's certificate of one's own. At earlier festivals, around 200 of them were issued per day.
The farm kitchen serves pumpkin soup, and there is a grill buffet with hearty specialities and bread on a stick over the campfire. Textile crafters dye wool, wood sculptors are at work. Adults pay what is posted on site, usually a small contribution, and food and drink cost extra.
By car, take the L22 from Rostock towards Graal-Müritz; the farm is signposted in Wiethagen and there is parking at the edge of the forest. Sturdy shoes and warm clothing make sense, because the farm is mostly outdoors.
From Ahrenshoop to Hiddensee
The Kammermusiktage Ahrenshoop run until Sunday 25 October. The Kulturstiftung Ahrenshoop has organised them since 2014, concerts, readings and film evenings are spread across the Schifferkirche, the Hotel Fischerwiege and the art museum, and the programme runs from a Bach trio to Piazzolla tango. The Nature and Game Week in Graal-Müritz ends on Saturday 24 October. Guided walks through the Rostocker Heide and stalking tours with foresters and hunters are part of the programme, and in the taking-part restaurants venison, red deer and wild boar are on the menu.
On the car-free island of Hiddensee, the Zeltkino Hiddensee at the harbour in Vitte is the only cinema. In the cooler months it runs in a heated tent, at least two films are shown daily, cabaret, children's theatre and concerts are on the schedule too, and the season lasts until 8 November.
The clocks go back in the night to Sunday: at 3:00 they return to 2:00.
