Traditional autumn fair of the city of Vechta with children's carousels, flea market, lantern parade, Sunday shopping, and light and music fireworks
The Thomasmarkt is one of Vechta's traditional city markets with a long history. Like many old market dates in German cities, the Thomasmarkt likely dates back to a saint's day — Saint Thomas — whose calendar date fell in late autumn and provided the occasion for a season-closing market. Today, the religious connection has faded, but the market tradition has been continuously maintained.
The market extends across the entire Vechta city center with rides in the central squares, market stalls in the pedestrian zone, and a flea market along the side streets. This distribution across multiple levels creates a lively city experience and integrates the market with downtown retail and gastronomy.
A characteristic tradition is the lantern parade on Friday evening. Families with children parade through the city center with homemade or purchased lanterns — a ritual that particularly appeals to Vechta's youngest residents and is reminiscent of the St. Martin's parades in the region.
The highlight of the festival weekend is the light and music fireworks. Choreographed pyrotechnics combined with music make the market a visible spectacle and offer a fitting season finale to the warm festival season before the Advent markets.
Market day Sunday is open for shopping: downtown retailers open in addition to the regular Saturday and complement the market offerings with special promotions and end-of-season sales.
