August starts on a Saturday in Thuringia, and the region wastes no time. This weekend brings a rock concert inside a castle courtyard, a shepherds' day with more than 1,000 sheep, and a medieval fete on Sunday. In Extremo at Creuzburg Castle: one night, one castle wall — our pick
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, Berlin medieval rock band In Extremo play an open-air concert at Creuzburg Castle in the Wartburg district. Doors open at 6 pm, the concert starts at 7:30 pm. The castle ranks among the best-preserved hilltop fortresses in Thuringia. Bagpipes and distortion pedals meet real stonework here rather than a stage set. The evening belongs to the castle's summer concert series, which in 2026 also features Matthias Reim, Saltatio Mortis, The BossHoss, Suzi Quatro and Madsen. Why our pick? Because this date happens exactly once, while almost everything else in the region runs for weeks. One castle, one concert, no second chance.
Thuringian Shepherds' Day in Hohenfelden: over 1,000 sheep at the open-air museum
Also on Saturday, August 1, the Thuringian Shepherds' Day gathers shepherds, spinners, felt artists and sheep breeders at the Hohenfelden open-air museum. More than 1,000 sheep of various breeds come together. It is the largest shepherding and wool event in the state. The programme covers shearing, sheepdog demonstrations, sheep droving and wool processing, plus a large market. The museum is Thuringia's biggest open-air museum and gives a fitting backdrop to a craft you rarely get to watch up close. For families with children, this is the most tangible date of the weekend.
Burgfest Kemenate Orlamünde: a knights' camp on Sunday, free entry
Sunday belongs to the Saale-Holzland district. On August 2, from 11 am to 6 pm, the Orlamünde castle association hosts the 29th edition of the Burgfest at the Kemenate. Music, jugglers, a knights' camp, medieval atmosphere and a small market fill the day, and entry costs nothing. Family-friendly, easy to take in, no ticket booth: a medieval fete carried by a local association rather than an events agency. If you still want something for Sunday before the week starts again, Orlamünde offers a short trip with a castle view.
Schwarzebeersfest Vesser: about 100 trays of berry cake in the Thuringian Forest
In Vesser, part of the town of Suhl, everything revolves around the bilberry from July 31 to August 2 — locally known as the „Schwarzebeere“. The Schwarzebeersfest is a cult folk festival in the southern Thuringian Forest. On Friday evening, a berry king or queen is crowned at the traditional homeland evening. The highlight for visitors comes on Sunday: an open stable serves roughly 100 trays of home-baked berry cake. If you like your folk festivals with forest air rather than fairground rides, head to Vesser this weekend.
Open Air Gößnitz: 33 years of independent rock in the Altenburger Land
From July 31 to August 2, the 33rd edition of Open Air Gößnitz takes over Gerth's meadow by the sports ground in Gößnitz. It is one of the oldest independent rock festivals in eastern Germany. Since 1993, around 2,000 rock, metal, punk and indie fans of all ages have met here every year in early August. Stage and campsite are not separated: you sleep where you stand during the day. If you want the opposite of the festival industry, you will find it on a meadow beside a small-town sports pitch.
Wartburg Festival Eisenach: Saturday is the closing day
The Wartburg Festival runs from July 18 to August 1, 2026. Saturday therefore marks the final day of this concert series. Performances take place at the Wartburg above Eisenach, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999 and the place where Luther translated the Bible. The Southern Thuringian Chamber Orchestra Foundation performs under artistic director Otto Sauter. It brings classical music and chamber concerts to two venues inside the castle, including the historic chapel. Sauter is one of the world's leading piccolo trumpeters. Classical music in a castle worth visiting without a ticket: the climb is part of the experience.
Kulturarena Jena: seven weeks of open air on the theatre square
Kulturarena Jena celebrates its 34th edition in 2026 and runs from July 8 to August 23. The first weekend of August therefore lands right in the middle of its season. More than 50 events spanning music, theatre, classical overtures and cinema nights fill the square in front of the theatre. The 2026 line-up includes Les Négresses Vertes at the opening, Bosse, Sportfreunde Stiller, Agnes Obel, Tanita Tikaram, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Enno Bunger and Mari Froes. Around 70,000 visitors pass through across the seven weeks. Check the daily schedule before you set off.
Leinefelde-Worbis Garden Show: 172 days of programme in the Eichsfeld
The 5th Thuringian State Garden Show runs from April 23 to October 11, 2026 in the twin town of Leinefelde-Worbis. Its motto reads «Reconciliation between town and landscape». More than 1,500 events are spread across the 172 days: concerts, family programmes, exhibitions and workshops, all included in the entrance fee. For a weekend in north-western Thuringia this is the fixed point. You can walk in without a plan and still find something. Anyone travelling with children has a full day covered here.
Yiddish Summer Weimar: «Yiddish Wo:men» in Goethe's city
From July 11 to August 15, 2026, Weimar is once again the centre of Yiddish music. Yiddish Summer Weimar counts as the world's most important festival and workshop institute for Yiddish music, language and culture. Since 1999 it has brought together musicians, scholars, dancers and language students from Europe, Israel, the United States and many other countries. The 2026 edition carries the motto «Yiddish Wo:men — Another Story of Modernity» and puts women at its centre. Performances take place at various venues across the old town. No other Thuringian event concentrates this musical tradition so densely.
SommerKomödie Erfurt: Sherlock Holmes in the Barfüßer ruin
Since July 30 and running until August 29, SommerKomödie Erfurt stages the crime comedy «Sherlock Holmes», based on the detective stories of Arthur Conan Doyle. The stage is the Barfüßer ruin in Erfurt's old town, a church nave without a roof. There are 400 open-air seats, unreserved seating, and an in-house production with a professional cast. The play has only just opened as our weekend arrives, so the ruin is freshly in use. If you are spending the evening in the state capital, here is theatre with no roof overhead.
Musiksommer Bad Tabarz: open-air concerts from Friday to Sunday
At the foot of the Inselsberg in the Gotha district, Musiksommer Bad Tabarz runs from May 14 to September 30, 2026. Around 50 open-air concerts are spread across Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. That means several dates fall on our weekend. Performances take place in beer gardens, in hotels and in the Theodor-Neubauer-Park of this Kneipp spa village. The repertoire spans folk music, jazz, Schlager, rock covers and acoustic sets. If you want to hike the Thuringian Forest with music in the background, stop in Bad Tabarz.
