Summer concert series on the Wartburg — Chapel and Castle Courtyard as historic stages
The Wartburg, overlooking Eisenach in the Wartburgkreis district of West Thuringia, is one of Germany's most iconic structures. Built in the mid-11th century, it is primarily famous as the refuge of Martin Luther, who translated the New Testament from Greek into German here in 1521/22, significantly shaping the language of the German Bible. It was the scene of the legendary Sängerkrieg (Minnesingers' Contest) in 1207 (dramatized by Wagner in 'Tannhäuser') and the gathering place for the Wartburgfest of the German Burschenschaften student fraternities in 1817. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999.
The Wartburg Festival was founded in 2000 by Otto Sauter and is associated with the Südthüringisches Kammerorchester Foundation. Sauter, one of the world's most important piccolo trumpeters (concerts with major orchestras, solo CDs, teaching), shapes the artistic direction. The Südthüringisches Kammerorchester accompanies many concerts, often with internationally acclaimed soloists — pianists, violinists, singers. The festival has a continental reach: students from the World & European Brass Association (WBA) participate in the concerts, forming a multi-generational ensemble with the orchestra.
The historic Chapel of the Wartburg is the venue for intimate chamber music concerts. With just under 100 seats and nearly a thousand years of history (Romanesque architecture), it is an unparalleled listening space — the walls themselves participate in the sound. The Castle Courtyard outside serves as an open-air stage for larger ensembles and summer concerts under the open sky; in the summer of 2026, Mariachi Universal featuring Carlos Avina will perform here on August 1 — an unusual, but typically Wartburgian program: the festival regularly brings world music and genre-bending acts to the venerable castle.
Two main concerts of the festival are confirmed for 2026: July 18, 7:30 PM, Chapel — 'Bach Meets…' with the Südthüringisches Kammerorchester (program details shortly before the concert). August 1, 7:30 PM, Castle Courtyard — Mariachi Universal featuring Carlos Avina as an open-air concert. Further concerts will be added throughout the spring/summer; the 2026 concert season runs from May to September at the Wartburg, with the Wartburg Festival as the artistic focus.
Eisenach is the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685). The Bach House on Frauenplan houses the world's largest Bach collection. Visitors attending a Wartburg Festival concert often combine it with a visit to the Bach House, Luther House, a city tour, and the castle tour itself. Eisenach is located between major transport routes — an ICE train stop on the Frankfurt–Berlin line and the A4 motorway — making it easily accessible.
The 2026 Wartburg Festival has announced two main concerts: on July 18, 'Bach Meets…' in the historic Chapel of the Wartburg, and on August 1, Mariachi Universal featuring Carlos Avina as an open-air performance in the Castle Courtyard. Both concerts start at 7:30 PM. Additional concerts from May to September will complement the season; the complete program will be continuously published on the Wartburg website.
