Advent magic in the UNESCO World Heritage site above Eisenach
Wartburg Castle, high above Eisenach in the Wartburg district (Thuringia), is among the most historic castles in Germany. It was here that Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German in 1521/22, and where the Burschenschaften (student fraternities) advocated for a free Germany in 1817. The castle has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. During Advent, this extraordinary setting transforms into one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in Central Germany.
The market consistently focuses on historic craftsmanship: candle makers dip long wicks into hot beeswax, glassblowers shape delicate Christmas tree baubles, and soap boilers create natural soaps from plant oils. Alongside them are stonemasons, pewter casters, lantern makers, basket weavers, and costume designers who tailor medieval garments. Herbalists sell medicinal tinctures and incense blends – a journey into the world of medieval workshops.
Travelling singers, hurdy-gurdy players, and ensembles of early music fill the castle courtyards with sounds that could have echoed in the Middle Ages. The scent of mulled wine, roasted almonds, and wood fires mingles with the melodies of historic instruments.
Admission to the market includes access to the castle courtyards, the Great Hall, the museum, and the famous Luther's Study. Visitors can opt for a guided tour of the medieval Palas or climb the South Tower – the view over the snow-covered Thuringian Forest is one of the most beautiful in Germany.
Unlike the large Christmas markets in Erfurt or Dresden, the Wartburg market remains relatively quiet and atmospheric. The limited duration to four Advent weekends and the natural confinement by the castle walls prevent the mass crowds found at other city markets. Those seeking medieval craftsmanship, good music, and a World Heritage backdrop will find it here.
On the three Advent weekends of November 28/29, December 5/6, and December 12/13, 2026, the gates of Wartburg Castle will open daily from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM for the Historic Christmas Market. In the snow-covered castle courtyards, candle makers, glassblowers, costume designers, lantern makers, soap boilers, stonemasons, herbalists, and pewter casters will showcase their skills. Musicians with historic instruments – hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, shawm – will provide the fitting soundscape.
Admission (toll) includes access to the castle courtyards, the Great Hall, and the museum, as well as the opportunity to book guided tours of the medieval Palas. The South Tower of Wartburg Castle offers a winter panorama over the Thuringian Forest.
