Jazz, light art, and performance in Hafenklang
Unlike most jazz festivals in the Hanseatic city, feel.jazz doesn't just focus on music. The festival sees itself as a multi-sensory experience — jazz, light art, interactive installations, and performances are created in a carefully considered choreography. The organizers describe the concept as a "multi-sensory experience," and they mean it: in every break between live sets, visual interventions transform the space of Hafenklang.
Hafenklang at Große Elbstraße 84 is located in the Altona-Altstadt district, within the Altona borough, directly on the Elbe riverbank. It's one of Hamburg's iconic live venues — two halls, direct access to the Elbe promenade, and an atmosphere distinct from the city center's venues. feel.jazz uses both halls as stages — the main stage downstairs, a smaller hall for intimate sets.
The program features ten live bands spread across two evenings — jazz in the broadest sense, from classic modern jazz to nu-jazz, jazz-hip-hop, and experimental formations. Afterwards, the "after.glow" after-show with curated DJ sets continues the festival until 4 AM.
What clearly sets feel.jazz apart from other Hamburg jazz festivals is its pricing model. Advance tickets range from €0 to €40 — visitors decide for themselves what they want to pay. At the box office, the Pay-What-You-Can rule applies with a recommended minimum contribution of €25 per evening. The organizers openly state their philosophy: "We want everyone to have access to art and culture." In a city where jazz is often presented as high culture with corresponding ticket prices, this is a deliberate political statement.
An integral part of the festival are light installations, interactive light sculptures, and short performances between live sets. The fusion of jazz and light art turns each hall into an immersive visual space where the music is continued on a second level.
The 2026 edition concluded successfully on February 14th — both evenings were well-attended by visitors from across the Hanseatic city and the North German jazz scene. The mix of modern jazz, nu-jazz, jazz-hip-hop, and experimental formations was complemented by light installations and performances between live sets. The after.glow after-show with curated DJ sets extended the festival each night until 4 AM.
The exact band lineup for the 2026 edition is documented on feeljazz.de.
