August 1 and 2, 2026 mark a turning point in this state's cultural calendar. On Sunday, the Heidelberg Castle Festival closes its hundredth season. At the same moment, across Baden-Württemberg, the festivals of the first school-holiday weekend get going.
Our pick this weekend sits neither in Heidelberg nor in any big city. It sits on a woodland sports field near Leonberg: rockXplosion turns 40. And it still charges nothing at the gate.
In between, the range is wide. An anime convention in Mannheim, a museum night in Karlsruhe, a classic car rally in Freiburg, a beer walk through hop gardens near Lake Constance. Twelve picks for the first weekend of August.
rockXplosion Warmbronn: 40 years of rock, still no ticket booth
From July 31 to August 2, 2026, the 40th Warmbronner Open Air takes over the Alter Waldsportplatz in Warmbronn. This Leonberg district in the Böblingen county produced Germany's oldest and largest free rock festival. More than 25 bands play across three days on two stages: metal, rock, punk, ska and metalcore.
rockXplosion is run entirely by volunteers. Four decades of the southern German hard rock scene in one place, and admission stays free. Anyone who wants to see a volunteer-run festival in its purest form heads to Warmbronn this weekend.
Heidelberg Castle Festival: the 100th season ends on Sunday
From June 11 to August 2, 2026, the Heidelberg Castle Festival marks its 100th anniversary. Founded in 1926, it ranks among Germany's oldest theatre and music festivals. The Theater und Orchester Heidelberg plays three venues inside the castle ruin: the courtyard as the main stage, the Dicker Turm and the Englischer Bau.
On Sunday, August 2, the curtain falls on this anniversary season. Anyone who still wants to catch the Schlossfestspiele in 2026 has exactly this weekend to do it. A castle ruin used as a theatre, for a hundred years running: nothing else in the state matches it.
AnimagiC Mannheim: Japanese pop culture takes the Rosengarten
From July 31 to August 2, 2026, the Congress Center Rosengarten in Mannheim becomes the meeting point for the anime and manga scene. AnimagiC is one of the biggest conventions of its kind in Germany. The 2026 motto is "100% MAGIC". The programme features Japanese guests of honour, the Animotion film festival, the J-music concert series SACRA MUSIC FES. × AnimagiC and a cosplay contest.
No beer tent, no brass band: AnimagiC is the counterweight to the classic summer fair. For three days, a convention centre in central Mannheim belongs to a crowd that usually meets online.
Musik im Park Schwetzingen: Michael Patrick Kelly against a baroque backdrop
From July 30 to August 9, 2026, the palace gardens of Schwetzingen become an open-air stage. The 17th edition of Musik im Park brings eight concerts in front of the baroque setting. On Saturday, August 1, Michael Patrick Kelly performs. Roxette and Luciano played the nights before; The Kooks, Giant Rooks, Uriah Heep and David Garrett follow later.
The Schwetzingen palace gardens rank among the best-known landscaped gardens in southern Germany. Musik im Park uses them as an open-air concert hall. Saturday night brings arguably the biggest name of the weekend.
Ketscher Backfischfest: 73 editions, 150,000 visitors, one fish dish
From July 31 to August 9, 2026, Ketsch on the Rhine celebrates the 73rd edition of its Backfischfest. More than 150,000 visitors are expected at this roughly ten-day folk festival. There is a beer tent, a wine arbour, a funfair and the dish that gave the event its name: Rhineland pan-fried fish. Live music, morning sessions and family days round it out.
This weekend is the opening weekend. The Backfischfest counts among the largest folk festivals in the Rhine-Neckar region. And the name fits: a single dish holds an entire festival together.
KAMUNA Karlsruhe: 18 museums, one night, one ticket
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, 18 Karlsruhe museums, galleries and cultural venues open their doors at the same time. The Karlsruhe museum night KAMUNA runs from 6 pm to midnight. It has existed since 1999 and ranks among the largest events of its kind in southern Germany. One ticket covers every venue, and a free shuttle links the sites.
Six hours, 18 addresses: realistically you manage four or five. KAMUNA is the pick for anyone who would rather spend this weekend in an exhibition than in a beer tent.
Kulturufer Friedrichshafen: 200 artists along the lakeside promenade
From July 31 to August 9, 2026, the lakeside promenade in Friedrichshafen turns into a festival mile. Over ten days, more than 200 artists perform there: actors, dancers, musicians, street performers, acrobats and magicians. Kulturufer is considered one of the most significant street arts festivals on Lake Constance and is certified as a Green Event Baden-Württemberg.
This weekend, Kulturufer is just getting started. Street art works without a seating plan: you walk along the Uferstraße and stop wherever something holds you.
Markgräfler Weinfest Staufen: 300 wines from Germany's southern edge
From July 31 to August 3, 2026, the Alfred-Schladerer-Platz in Staufen im Breisgau becomes the largest open-air wine bar in the Markgräflerland. Twenty-six wineries and cooperatives pour more than 300 wines from Germany's southernmost wine region. The range runs from Gutedel through Spätburgunder and Cabernet Sauvignon to ice wine.
The Markgräfler Weinfest has been part of summer in the Breisgau since 1954. For four days, an entire wine region stands on one square. There is no more compact way to taste southern Baden.
Tettnanger Hopfenwandertag: a four-kilometre beer trail, every other year
On Sunday, August 2, 2026, the Tettnang hop trail becomes a beer route. From 10 am to 6 pm, around 30 national and international breweries pour their specialities. They are spread across four to five themed villages along the four kilometres between Tettnang and Siggenweiler. Booking gets you a wristband, a glass and drink vouchers in one package.
The Hopfenwandertag only happens every two years. Tettnang supplies hops to breweries worldwide. Here you walk straight through the gardens the raw material actually comes from.
Seenachtsfest Schluchsee: lights on the Black Forest's largest mountain lake
On August 1 and 2, 2026, the lakeside promenade at Schluchsee becomes a festival setting. Illuminated boats glide across the still water, live bands and an open-air disco supply the music, and food stalls serve Baden specialities. Thousands of visitors come to the largest mountain lake in the Black Forest.
The Seenachtsfest falls on the first weekend of August. A mountain lake instead of a fairground, lights on water instead of stage floodlights: one of the quieter and most striking settings of the weekend.
Schauinsland Klassik: classic cars instead of a stage near Freiburg
From July 31 to August 3, 2026, Schauinsland Klassik starts from the Messe Freiburg. The rally carries on the legacy of the legendary ADAC Schauinsland hill climb. That course ran from Freiburg's city limits up to the 1,284-metre Schauinsland summit. On the start list: historic sports, racing and touring cars from more than 100 years of motoring.
That makes Schauinsland Klassik one of the biggest classic car rallies in south-west Germany. No concert, no beer tent: the audience stands at the roadside, and the lead actors have four wheels.
50th Leutenbacher Hocketse: free beer to open the holidays
From July 31 to August 2, 2026, the Leutenbacher Hocketse at the Spatzenhof marks its 50th anniversary. This long-running street festival lands exactly on the first weekend of the Baden-Württemberg summer holidays. It is organised by the municipality of Leutenbach and the Musikverein Leutenbach together with local clubs. Three days of music on two stages, with free beer at the opening.
The Hocketse is the Swabian classic in its purest form: beer benches, club stalls, two stages. For the 50th time, the clubs of one village put on an entire weekend together.
