Four days of classic car rally from the Black Forest to the Münsterplatz — successor to the legendary ADAC Schauinsland Hill Climb
Few courses in the history of German motorsport resonate like the Schauinsland. The legendary uphill drive from the Günterstal district to the summit station at 1284 meters was the scene of the ADAC Schauinsland Hill Climb, held in Freiburg from 1925 to 1984, counting among the great classics of European motorsport. Before its discontinuation, it was considered Germany's most demanding mountain course — narrow, winding, with gigantic elevation changes in a confined space.
With the Schauinsland Klassik, the ADAC Südbaden, together with the Freiburger Motorsportclub e.V., has created a contemporary format that makes the historic route drivable again — but this time not as a high-speed race, but as a regularity rally for historic vehicles. The concept combines the legacy of the hill climb with the current practice of historic motorsport: emphasis on precision rather than best times, on the driving experience rather than raw speed, on showcasing the historic route and the historic cars.
The 2026 program spans four days. On Thursday, July 31, documentation checks and technical inspections take place at the Messe Freiburg grounds (3–8 PM), with a co-driver training in the evening. On Friday, August 1, the first car starts at 1 PM for the day's tour through the Black Forest — arrival in the evening (around 7:30 PM) at Freiburg's Münsterplatz, the city's medieval main square directly in front of Freiburg Minster. On Saturday, August 2, the second stage runs from 8:30 AM (finishing at 3 PM), with the awards ceremony in the evening from 7:30 PM. On Sunday, August 3, a classic car meet at Messe Freiburg between 10 AM and 6 PM invites all enthusiasts of historic vehicles.
The rally is open to historic sports, racing, and touring cars — from pre-war classics of the 1920s and 30s, through the racing and sports car classics of the 1950s and 60s (Mercedes 300 SL, Porsche 356, Jaguar XK, Ferrari 250), to younger classics from the 1970s and 80s. The field regularly comprises between 100 and 150 vehicles — a mix of German, Italian, British, and French makes, driven by private owners, works drivers, and collectors from all over Europe.
Freiburg im Breisgau (postal code 79108, district 08311, approx. 235,000 inhabitants) is Germany's southernmost major city and also its warmest — its location on the western edge of the Black Forest and near the Upper Rhine makes it the ideal base for a classic car rally. The Freiburg Minster, with its 116-meter-high tower, provides the most spectacular backdrop offered by events in southern Germany. When a hundred historic cars gather in front of the Minster on Friday evening, the sound of engines, civic history, and the silhouette of the main tower merge into a spectacle that draws classic motorsport enthusiasts from far beyond Baden-Württemberg.
The 2026 edition spans four days, from Thursday to Sunday. The weekend combines the Messe Freiburg as the organizational hub with the Münsterplatz as the social highlight and the Black Forest route as the sporting heart.
