18 museums, one night, one ticket — Karlsruhe Museum Night annually on the first Saturday in August
KAMUNA has been held annually on the first Saturday in August since 1999 and is one of the oldest and largest museum nights in Germany. What began as a small city event is now a well-established institution: 18 participating museums and cultural institutions, a joint ticketing system, free shuttle service between locations, an interactive program planner on the website, and a special program for young visitors. KAMUNA not only brings traditional museum-goers to Karlsruhe's city center but also attracts a young, culturally curious audience to Karlsruhe's museum landscape.
The regular KAMUNA repertoire includes the major Karlsruhe institutions:
Each venue curates its own KAMUNA program: special tours, readings, concerts, workshops, performances, and of course, the current exhibitions. This creates a night where one could theoretically experience 18 completely different programs — in practice, most visitors focus on 3–5 venues of their choice.
The KAMUNA motto for 2026 is "Knowledge Creates Diversity" — a reflection on the role of science, art, and education in a pluralistic society. Participating venues will incorporate the motto into their special programs, ranging from discussion panels to performances. The special program "JUNGE KAMUNA" offers age-appropriate workshops, hands-on activities, and family tours for children and young people.
Karlsruhe (an independent city in the state of Baden-Württemberg, district code 08212, with approximately 309,000 inhabitants) is home to the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice, several major research institutions (KIT — Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), and a distinct museum landscape of supra-regional importance. This concentration makes the KAMUNA format possible and meaningful — 18 high-quality venues within walking distance in the city center (plus those connected by shuttle) represent an unusual density for a German medium-sized city.
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, KAMUNA invites you to the 28th Karlsruhe Museum Night. From 6 PM to midnight, the 18 participating venues open their doors — each with its own special program centered around this year's motto "Knowledge Creates Diversity". Special tours, readings, concerts, performances, and workshops make the night a dense cultural experience.
A KAMUNA ticket grants admission to all venues. The free KAMUNA shuttle connects the locations — from the city center with ZKM and Staatliche Kunsthalle to the venues located in the Oststadt and on the outskirts. The interactive program planner on kamuna.de helps in curating your own tour through Karlsruhe's museum landscape.
