Three squares, a "Flying Santa Claus" and a month of pre-Christmas cheer in the fan-shaped city
The Karlsruhe Christmas Market is spread across three city center squares, each developing its own atmosphere. Marktplatz, with its Christmas market of lights around the large Christmas pyramid, is the heart of the event – mulled wine, bratwurst, standing tables, twinkling lights. Friedrichsplatz is designed as a "forest Christmas": international delicacies and handicrafts are offered in decorated gable houses – from Belgian chocolate stands to Austrian cheese platters. Kirchplatz St. Stephan is the children's paradise of the market with carousels, a train, fairy tale huts, and a daily program for the little ones.
The most unusual highlight is Falko Traber, one of Germany's best-known high-wire artists, who hovers as the "Flying Santa Claus" over Marktplatz. His show can be seen daily at 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM – a Karlsruhe invention that has become an integral part of the market and has been described many times in the supra-regional press.
Open daily from 11 AM – Sundays to Thursdays until 9 PM, Fridays and Saturdays until 10 PM. The culinary offerings include vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, and several stands offer organic products. The market is largely accessible, with accessible toilets available. A Ferris wheel operates at Marktplatz – from above, you can see the fan-shaped structure of Karlsruhe particularly well in snow and lights.
With almost 310,000 inhabitants, Karlsruhe is the second-largest city in Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart and the seat of the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice. The city was founded in 1715 as a baroque planned city with a fan-shaped layout around Karlsruhe Castle – a structure that becomes particularly visible from the Ferris wheel in winter. You can reach Karlsruhe directly from Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Munich via ICE and TGV. The subway stops directly at Marktplatz – 10 minutes from the train station.
For a month, Karlsruhe celebrates Christmas on three city center squares. Marktplatz becomes the Christmas market of lights with a pyramid and Ferris wheel, Friedrichsplatz the "forest Christmas" with international delicacies, and Kirchplatz St. Stephan the children's paradise.
