Summer night festival at Germany's highest reservoir with fireworks over the Black Forest
As the August sun sinks behind the ridges of the Hochschwarzwald (High Black Forest), one of Southern Germany's most atmospheric summer festivals begins at Schluchsee. The Seenachtsfest Schluchsee has been the social highlight of the summer for decades in the municipality of Schluchsee, a climatic health resort in the Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. Schluchsee itself, about seven kilometers long, is the largest reservoir in the Black Forest and is situated at an altitude of 930 meters – a spectacular natural backdrop for a festival of lights on the water.
The 2026 edition takes place on Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2, 2026, on the Schluchsee lake promenade. The festival grounds open at 2:00 PM on Saturday, with the official opening marked by the tapping of the keg by Mayor Jürgen Kaiser. Starting in the late afternoon, the regionally known band „Brasst Scho'" will perform, followed by live acts and an open-air disco late into the night. The absolute highlight: the grand fireworks display over the lake around 10:30 PM, which can be admired from both shores and from the water.
Sunday is dedicated to families: face painting, bouncy castles, hands-on activities, and a moderated children's stage program transform the promenade into a playground with a mountain panorama. Additionally, there will be food stalls, regional winegrowers, and Hochschwarzwald specialties.
A tradition of the Seenachtsfest is the illuminated boats that glide slowly across the water on Saturday evening — fishermen, sailors, and private boat owners decorate their vessels with lanterns, torches, and LED string lights. Viewed from the shore, it creates a floating sea of lights against the dark silhouette of the mountain forests. Combined with the illumination of the lake promenade and the later fireworks, Schluchsee becomes one of Southern Germany's most beautiful postcard motifs on this night.
Over 30 stalls offer specialties from Baden, Swabia, and the Alpine region: Black Forest trout and char from the lake, Schäufele (pork shoulder) and smoked sausage, Kässpätzle (cheese noodles) and Flammkuchen (tarte flambée), accompanied by Baden wines, Black Forest whisky, brandies, and liqueurs from local distilleries. For families, there are crêpes, ice cream, and children's meals. Local clubs and restaurateurs are responsible for the catering — many volunteer their time.
Admission on Saturday from 5:00 PM costs €5; before that and all day Sunday, entry is free. Schluchsee is easily accessible via the Dreiseenbahn (Titisee–Seebrugg) — the Schluchsee stop is directly on the lake promenade. By car: B500 or B317. Parking is signposted but heavily used — early arrival or using the train is recommended. In case of extreme weather (thunderstorms), the fireworks may be postponed — updates on hochschwarzwald.de.
