About Wiesoppenheim Kerwe

The Wiesoppenheim Kerwe is the annual Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the small Worms district of Wiesoppenheim and an important date in the Rhenish-Hesse festival calendar. In 2026, it will be celebrated in September – the exact dates will be confirmed by the local community in early summer. The Kerweborsch (festival boy) for 2026 has already been chosen since September 19, 2025: Bastian II Bickel will represent the Kerwe. The festival's focus is on erecting the Kerwe tree, tent evenings with live music, the festival service, a family program, and the traditional Kerwe burial at the end. A classic Rhenish-Hesse folk festival tradition that puts Wiesoppenheim at the center of the Worms festival summer for a few days.

Wiesoppenheim – a small Worms district

Wiesoppenheim is one of the smaller districts of Worms with around 1,300 inhabitants, located in the west of the city area. The place has largely retained its village atmosphere – with its own parish church, its own clubs, and a committed citizenry. The Kerwe is one of the district's identity events and annually brings together the Wiesoppenheim citizens as well as guests from the surrounding Worms districts.

The Kerweborsch as a symbol

In Rhenish-Hesse-Palatinate tradition, the "Kerweborsch" (also "Kerbborsch") has central importance: It is the representative of the unmarried men, elected by the festival committee, who represents the Kerwe for one year. The Kerweborsch is presented to the public with great pride, delivers the famous "Kerweborsch-Red" (a humorous speech with barbs aimed at politicians and fellow citizens), and guides the festival events. For 2026, Bastian II Bickel has been chosen as the Kerweborsch of Wiesoppenheim – a young Wiesoppenheimer involved in local clubs.

Classic Kerwe elements

The Wiesoppenheim Kerwe follows the classic Rhenish-Hesse pattern: Opening with the erection of the Kerwe tree (decorated with colorful ribbons, bows, symbolic objects), presentation of the Kerweborsch, festival service on Sunday morning, morning pint, festival tent with live music on Saturday and Sunday evenings, a small amusement park, and the traditional Kerwe burial at the end.

Festival tent at the Wiesoppenheim festival grounds

The festival tent is the focal point of the evening events. Local clubs run the catering – beer, wine from Wiesoppenheim vineyards, classic festival tent dishes. Live bands from the region provide the musical accompaniment, with classic Schlager, cover bands, and occasionally dance music.

Date 2026 to be confirmed

The exact dates for the Wiesoppenheim Kerwe 2026 have not yet been definitively set. As a rule, the Kerwe takes place in the first two weeks of September. The Kerweborsch Bastian II Bickel has already been chosen, indicating that preparations are in full swing.
