Twenty Years of Münsterland Giro
The Sparkassen Münsterland Giro has been the cycling flagship of the northern state of North Rhine-Westphalia since 2006. On Saturday, October 3, 2026 — German Unity Day — the classic race will hold its 20th edition. The anniversary is celebrated with a special feature: for the first time, the professional race does not start in Münster, but in the city of Borken, which celebrates 800 years of town rights in 2026.
Route: Borken → Baumberge → Münster
The route for the professional race (over 200 km) leads from Borken's market square through the western Münsterland, over the Baumberge hills as the decisive undulating section, and ends on the Prinzipalmarkt in Münster — the historic stage for the finish sprint under the Renaissance gables of the cathedral city. The Baumberge hills, with their approximately 180 meters of elevation gain over 6 km, have been the key section for years, where the field is thinned out.
LeezenCup for Amateur Cyclists
Parallel to the professional race, the LeezenCup rolls along — the Giro's mass-participation competition, named after "Leeze" (Münsterland dialect for bicycle). Three distances are available in 2026: 65 km, 95 km, and 125 km. Following a capacity increase of 1,000 additional starting places, a total of 8,500 places are available in 2026 — advance booking has been open since the end of 2025 with record registrations. In addition, there are the children's races LeezenKids and the inclusive variant LeezenInklusiv.
Pro Cup with International Elite
The Sparkassen Profi-Cup over more than 200 km is part of the UCI calendar and regularly attracts international pro teams to the Münsterland. German television (WDR) broadcasts live from the race car and the finish area. Previous winners include sprinters like John Degenkolb and Pascal Ackermann — the Münsterland Giro is known as a sprinters' classic, even though the Baumberge hills occasionally give breakaway riders a chance.
Festival Atmosphere at Prinzipalmarkt
The finish sprint on the Prinzipalmarkt is one of the most iconic moments in the German cycling calendar. Thousands of spectators line the final kilometers through Münster's city center, with the finish line running directly past the town hall. Around it, a cycling festival emerges with the LeezenExpo, an exhibitors' mile, workshops, and route previews in the days leading up to the race.
Münster — Germany's Cycling Capital
With a cycling share of around 40% of traffic, Münster is considered Germany's cycling capital. The Münsterland Giro therefore fits perfectly into the city's self-image — cycling here is not a niche, but everyday culture. Even after the contract extension until 2030, the classic's future is secured.
