State festival for the 80th birthday of North Rhine-Westphalia — August 28–30, 2026 in Münster
On the weekend of August 28 to 30, 2026, Münster will host the NRW-Tag 2026 — the official state festival celebrating the 80th birthday of North Rhine-Westphalia. The state is one of the oldest creations of the young Federal Republic (founded in 1946 by the British occupation authorities) and is celebrating its milestone birthday with the traditional NRW-Tag, which takes place every one to two years in a different city. Münster — as the capital of Westphalia and seat of many state institutions — is the host in 2026. The festival motto is „Democracy Lives. Diversity Connects.".
The entire city center of Münster will become a festival area, divided into eleven themed miles, each with its own focus and program items:
In total, over 200 exhibitors and 250 program items are announced — from hands-on activities for children and political talk rounds to culinary specialties from all parts of the state.
The official opening concert on Friday evening will be performed by Berlin artist Zartmann, who has „made the leap from insider tip to a firm fixture in the German music scene in a very short time." Also featured: the indie electropop band Zimmer90 and solo artist Aaron. Tickets available from April 24, 2026, 11 AM, at €29 plus fees via Eventim.
On Saturday evening from 8:15 PM, the Philharmonie Südwestfalen will perform a grand classical concert on Schlossplatz — against the baroque backdrop of Münster Castle. The program includes works by European composers as a sonic symbol of NRW's cultural diversity.
Three additional stages along Salzstraße will offer programming on all three days — bands from NRW, comedy, dance groups, hands-on workshops.
Parallel to the NRW-Tag, the city festival Münster Mittendrin will take place — with 13 stages and „Experience Islands" spread throughout the city center. Münster Marketing organizes this event every few years as the city's summer highlight; in 2026, both events will merge into a single major event.
The independent city of Münster, with around 320,000 inhabitants, is the capital of Westphalia and the seat of many NRW state institutions — including the Higher Administrative Court, the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe, and the Münster district government. The Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität makes it one of the largest university cities in Germany. With its baroque city center, the Prinzipalmarkt, the St.-Paulus-Dom, the Schloss, and the Aasee, Münster offers the perfect backdrop for a state festival of this magnitude.
The NRW-Tag has been organized by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia at irregular intervals since 1995 — usually every one to two years in a different city. Previous hosts included Düsseldorf, Bielefeld, Münster, Bonn, Dortmund, and most recently Bielefeld (2024). The event is always free to access (excluding ticketed main stage concerts) and is intended as a festival of democracy, showcasing the state of NRW as a federal, diverse, and vibrant region.
Münster will be the stage for North Rhine-Westphalia's largest state festival from August 28 to 30, 2026. Eleven themed miles focusing on climate, science, sports, religion, diversity, and tourism will be spread throughout the entire city center. Main stage headliner Friday: Zartmann, Zimmer90, Aaron on Domplatz. Saturday classical: Philharmonie Südwestfalen on Schlossplatz. City festival Münster Mittendrin integrated with 13 stages.
Three additional stages along Salzstraße — bands from NRW, comedy, dance.
Admission to themed miles and most stages is free. Headliner concerts require tickets.
