DLRG/NIVEA Beach Festival Burhave — Water Safety, Games, and Family Fun on the North Sea
The DLRG/NIVEA Beach Festival is one of the most established beach festivals on Germany's coasts and tours several locations on the North and Baltic Seas each year. Burhave in the municipality of Butjadingen has been one of the permanent locations for years and, thanks to its family-friendly beach and tourist infrastructure, is among the highlights of the beach festival season.
Education, Safety, and Fun
The focus of the beach festival is the combination of water safety and family entertainment. The DLRG uses the opportunity to raise awareness among parents and children about the risks at sea with demonstrations, hands-on stations, and information — from correct behavior in the surf and first aid for sunstroke to understanding currents in the Wadden Sea. NIVEA complements the program with sun protection activities, free sunscreen samples, and skin protection tips.
Hands-on Program for Children
For families, the beach festival is a full day of experiences: sandcastle building competitions, water play stations, bouncy castle, swimming training, introductory water sports courses, and much more. The DLRG actively involves children in age-appropriate tasks, so knowledge about water, swimming, and rescue is conveyed playfully.
Rescue Demonstrations
The highlight of the day is the rescue demonstrations by the DLRG: water rescuers show how a sea rescue takes place — from spotting a person in distress to using boards, buoys, and boats, to providing care on the beach. An impressive spectacle that also highlights the importance of the DLRG's volunteer work.

As every year, the DLRG/NIVEA tour will make a stop in Burhave again in 2026. The exact tour dates will be announced in spring by the DLRG and its partner NIVEA. With the beach festival, the two organizations combine safety and sun protection education with a family-friendly stage and hands-on program.
