Whitsun Maifest of the Maigesellschaft Gürzenich since 1910 — with procession on Ratsstraße, King's Ball and cover band Radiotones
On Whitsun weekend, Gürzenich — the eastern district of Düren — is firmly in the hands of the Maifest. The Maigesellschaft Gürzenich, founded in 1910 and thus one of the oldest Maigesellschaften in the Düren district, organizes a two-day festival program on the Gürzenich Schützenplatz every year. Maypoles, festival procession, festival ball, King's Ball — everything that belongs to a Rhenish Maifest.
The 2026 edition runs on Whitsun weekend, Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24:
The May King and Queen Couple 2026 is Hannah Teschke and Jannik Floßdorf. They represent the Maigesellschaft Gürzenich during the 2026 Maifest season and are at the center of all festivities. The King's Ball celebrates the King and Queen couple, they ride in the King's carriage during the procession, and they hand over their title to the successor couple at the end of the season.
The Maigesellschaft Gürzenich was founded in 1910 and is therefore over 115 years old. During this time, a unique festival culture has developed around the association: the maypole setting, the King's shooting, the festival procession, the King's Ball — all integral parts of the Gürzenich district calendar. Drum corps, brass bands, the fire department, and friendly Maigesellschaften from neighboring communities accompany the procession on Sunday afternoon.
Gürzenich is an eastern district of Düren, with a village character and active community life. With around 7,000 inhabitants, Gürzenich has retained its independence after incorporation — visible in the Maigesellschaft, the fire department, the carnival association, and local businesses.
Düren (around 95,000 inhabitants) is the district capital of Düren in the Rur Depression between Aachen and Cologne. Historically shaped by the paper industry, today it is a typical Rhenish medium-sized city. The May and marksmen's festival culture is strongly pronounced in the Düren district — several districts celebrate their own Maifeste, and Rhenish traditional customs are particularly alive here.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition established 115 years ago by the Maigesellschaft Gürzenich (founded in 1910). The King and Queen Couple Hannah Teschke and Jannik Floßdorf represent the association throughout the Maifest. Current program changes on the association's website.
