Traditional customs festival of the Maigesellschaft Birgel in the Düren district
The Maifest has a long tradition in the Rhineland. In countless villages and districts, Maypoles are erected, May Kings are proclaimed, and May Nights are celebrated. The Maifest Birgel in the Birgel district of Düren is one of the best-known May festivals in the Düren district – supported by the traditional Maigesellschaft Birgel.
The Maigesellschaft Birgel consists of young men from the district who are dedicated to preserving local customs. They organise the festival, erect the Maypole, choose the May King, and lead the parade. Membership is an honour and, at the same time, a social bond across generations.
The festival begins with preparations on Friday evening, followed by the Maypole erection on Saturday. Sunday features the parade through Birgel, the proclamation of the king, and the grand festival evening. Dancing, live music, and regional Eifel specialities accompany the festival.
A special feature of the customs in the Düren district is the May Night on April 30th / May 1st. In Birgel, the Maypole is traditionally erected in the church square on this night – the prelude to a series of events that accompany the entire month of May. The actual Maifest follows a week later.
Birgel is one of Düren's smaller districts, with a village character and close social structures. The Maifest is THE event of the year – it brings residents together, welcomes visitors warmly, and allows younger generations to learn about customs from their elders. A festival can hardly create more community spirit.
May Night and Maifest are celebrated throughout the Düren district. The local newspaper "DN-News" publishes an annual overview "Customs in the Düren District" with all dates. The Maifest Birgel is a firm fixture and is often cited as one of the liveliest events.
In 2026, the Maigesellschaft Birgel once again invites you to its three-day Maifest. The date is confirmed by DN-News in the overview "Customs in the Düren District 2026". The programme includes: Festival evening on Friday, Maypole erection and festival evening on Saturday, parade, King's proclamation, and grand festival ball on Sunday.
A week later, on April 30 / May 1, 2026, the traditional May Night with Maypole erection at the church square will take place starting at 6 PM.
