May Customs in the Rhineland
The Maifest has a long tradition in the Rhineland. In countless villages and districts, Maypoles are erected, May Kings are proclaimed, and May Nights are celebrated. The Maifest Birgel in the Birgel district of Düren is one of the best-known May festivals in the Düren district – supported by the traditional Maigesellschaft Birgel.
The Maigesellschaft as Organiser
The Maigesellschaft Birgel consists of young men from the district who are dedicated to preserving local customs. They organise the festival, erect the Maypole, choose the May King, and lead the parade. Membership is an honour and, at the same time, a social bond across generations.
The Festival Schedule
The festival begins with preparations on Friday evening, followed by the Maypole erection on Saturday. Sunday features the parade through Birgel, the proclamation of the king, and the grand festival evening. Dancing, live music, and regional Eifel specialities accompany the festival.
May Night on April 30th
A special feature of the customs in the Düren district is the May Night on April 30th / May 1st. In Birgel, the Maypole is traditionally erected in the church square on this night – the prelude to a series of events that accompany the entire month of May. The actual Maifest follows a week later.
Birgel – A Small District with Great Identity
Birgel is one of Düren's smaller districts, with a village character and close social structures. The Maifest is THE event of the year – it brings residents together, welcomes visitors warmly, and allows younger generations to learn about customs from their elders. A festival can hardly create more community spirit.
Düren District and its May Traditions
May Night and Maifest are celebrated throughout the Düren district. The local newspaper "DN-News" publishes an annual overview "Customs in the Düren District" with all dates. The Maifest Birgel is a firm fixture and is often cited as one of the liveliest events.
