Four days of town festival by associations and nationalities on the Bergstraße
The Bensheim Civic Festival has been the social highlight of the southern Hessian Bergstraße town since 1975. 2026 marks the 51st edition – following the big anniversary year 2025, when the festival celebrated its 50th birthday. For four days, the historic pedestrian zone along the main street transforms into an open festival mile, where around 30 Bensheim associations set up their stalls and approximately 100,000 visitors from the region meet.
The programmatic backbone is the four stages distributed throughout the city center: at Storchennestplatz as the main stage, at the Marktplatz, at Beauner Platz, and at Hospitalplatz. Rock, pop, Schlager, and brass music acts alternate on the stages – a deliberately broad repertoire that appeals to the different generations of the Bensheim audience. Local bands from the Bergstraße region dominate the lineup, supplemented by a few supra-regional headliners.
The Civic Festival is not a festival to be consumed – it is one that is supported. Around 30 Bensheim associations serve their guests with their own stalls, from the Auerbach Sports Association to the Bensheim Hiking Club to the DLRG local group. This association catering is the economic foundation of the festival: the profits from the four festival days often finance significant parts of the annual budgets of the participating associations. It is a classic southern Hessian town festival model that is widespread in the region and which Bensheim cultivates with great consistency.
The opening on Thursday, June 11, 2026, starting at 6 p.m. on the main stage at Storchennestplatz follows a fixed ritual: Mayor Christine Klein performs the traditional keg tapping ceremony, after which the new Bensheim Blossom Queen is crowned. This tradition dates back to Bensheim's Blossom Festival history and connects the Civic Festival with the town's identity as a center of Bergstraße fruit cultivation.
A special feature is Saturday: on this day, the Intercultural Festival runs as a program within the program. Around 70 performers from various Bensheim communities present music, dance, and culinary specialties from their countries of origin. The format, under the motto "Bensheim lives integration and diversity," has been an integral part of the Civic Festival for years and underscores the town's self-image as a multicultural community.
The conclusion on Sunday is marked by several formats: an ecumenical service on the main stage, the open shopping day (1 p.m. to 6 p.m.) with Bensheim's retailers, the flower market and plant flea market, and the musical finale "Musik verein(t)" (Music unites), where the Bensheim associations play a joint closing concert.
Bensheim, with its approximately 41,000 inhabitants, is the largest town in the Bergstraße district and is located on the famous Bergstraße between Darmstadt and Heidelberg – one of Germany's mildest climate zones. The historic city center with its half-timbered houses and the late Baroque town church of St. Georg forms the ideal backdrop for a traditional town festival. The Civic Festival is one of the formats with which Bensheim positions itself as the cultural center of the Bergstraße.
The 2026 edition follows the established four-day concept of the Civic Festival. The organizer is the Bensheim Tourist Association in cooperation with the Bensheim associations. The stage programs for the four festival days will be published shortly before the festival at verkehrsverein-bensheim.de/bf/.
