International Street Theatre Festival in the Old Town of Heppenheim
Gassensensationen is one of Germany's most traditional street theatre festivals. Since 1992, the historic old town of Heppenheim (Bergstraße) has transformed annually into an open-air stage for four days, where international artists showcase their skills. In 2026, the 33rd edition runs from July 8th to 11th. The organizer is the association Freunde und Förderer der Gassensensationen e.V. with almost 1,400 members – an exceptionally strong civic sponsorship for a cultural festival of this size.
The performance venues are the narrow alleys and squares around the Marktplatz, Friedrichstraße, and the Kastanienhof. The half-timbered backdrop of Heppenheim's old town – an architectural gem with the Liebfrauenkirche ('Cathedral of the Bergstraße') as a visual anchor – is part of the production. Artists perform directly between the rows of houses, on house walls, in gateways, or on specially constructed stages.
The repertoire of Gassensensationen includes acrobatics, comedy, musical theatre, puppet theatre, wild street art, and large square productions. Companies from all over Europe, Latin America, and Asia are invited – the international focus is a hallmark of the festival. Around 30,000 visitors come to the small town on the Bergstraße over the four evenings.
A dedicated children's programme runs during the day in the Kastanienhof with age-appropriate performances by clowns, puppeteers, and jugglers. This makes Gassensensationen a family festival – with free admission, no pre-registration, no security checks.
Heppenheim is the district town of Bergstraße in southern Hesse and is located at the transition from the Odenwald forest to the Rhine plain. The town is part of the Hessische Bergstraße, one of Germany's warmest wine-growing regions. The old town with its half-timbered market square, the Marstall, and the late Gothic Liebfrauenkirche forms one of the most beautiful festival backdrops in southern Germany. Nearby are Auerbach Castle and the ruins of Starkenburg Castle.
Gassensensationen is a hat festival: Admission is free, and artists are compensated through donations collected in their hats after each performance. Main sponsors such as Sparkasse Starkenburg, the energy provider GGEW, and the pharmaceutical company Infectopharm support the infrastructure. Those who want to get involved can become association members, volunteer, or make a donation.
Classic hat festival format with performances from late afternoon until late at night. Companies from all over Europe, Latin America, and Asia perform in the alleys, on the market square, and in the Kastanienhof. The exact programme will be published a few weeks before the festival on the festival website and in a printed booklet.
Free admission – hat festival. Donations in the hat after each performance. Main sponsors: Sparkasse Starkenburg, GGEW, Infectopharm.
By Car: A5 (Frankfurt–Heidelberg), Heppenheim exit. Parking available at the train station and the festival grounds. By Train: Heppenheim station (RE/RB Frankfurt–Heidelberg), from there approx. 10 minutes walk to the old town.
Free admission (hat festival). Donations in the hat after each performance are appreciated and enable the festival.
Use the programme schedule (available as a printed booklet at the festival information stand) as a route planner – the parallel performances in the various alleys allow for individual evening tours. The final performances late in the evening on the market square are usually highlights with a large audience.
