Carnival merriment with Peter Wackel at the Historic Market Square
Homburg is located in the east of Saarland and, with almost 43,000 inhabitants, is one of the most important cities in the Saar-Palatinate district. The city has its own carnival tradition, which differs from the Saarland 'Faasend' and is more closely linked to the Palatinate 'Fastnacht'. The annual highlight is the Faschingstreiben on Rose Monday in the Historic Market Square in the old town.
The organizer of the event is the Homburger Narrenzunft (HNZ), one of the oldest and most active carnival clubs in the Saar-Palatinate district. Their entry around midday, accompanied by the Kirrberg parish band, marks the official start. The HNZ maintains a classic carnival image with its guard, its prince and princess couples, and its own session medals.
As with many Saarland carnival celebrations, Homburg also relies on a special guest appearance by a well-known party Schlager star. Peter Wackel is announced for 2026 – one of Germany's longest-serving Mallorca hit artists, whose performance traditionally takes place around 3:00 PM. With songs like "Joana", "Scheiß drauf!" (Don't give a damn!), or "Aufstehn" (Get up), he gets the market square singing along.
Harald and Myriam Keller open the festivities with classic Fastnacht songs. The live band Konsorten provides the musical accompaniment between acts – those planning to spend the whole day in the market square in Homburg can expect a continuously filled program. On Shrove Tuesday, the Children's Carnival in the Saalbau follows – the follow-up program for the youngest jesters.
With over 3000 visitors from all over the Saar-Palatinate district and the Palatinate, the Faschingstreiben is one of the largest Rose Monday events in the region. The city of Homburg emphasizes the peaceful concept: Unlike many other major events, Homburg's Rose Monday is considered family-friendly and relaxed.
The 2026 edition continues the proven format: opening around 11:11 AM, classic Fastnacht songs, entry of the Narrenzunft, continuous live music, and a Schlager star as the highlight. On Shrove Tuesday, the children's carnival follows in the Saalbau.
