Regional market with products from the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve
The Landmarkt Saar-Pfalz is the annual showcase of the regional agricultural and food industry in the Saarpfalz district. On the Historischer Marktplatz and Eisenbahnstraße in Homburg, around 40 exhibitors present seasonal products from organic farming, game and sausage products, dairies, apiaries, bakeries, distilleries, and manufactories. The focus is clearly on direct marketing: no wholesalers, no resellers, but producers who explain their own products.
The market's special feature is its cross-border setup. Exhibitors come from Saarland, the adjacent Rhineland-Palatinate (especially the Palatinate), and France (Lorraine, Alsace). Thus, the Landmarkt reflects what is everyday life in Saarland: culinary culture is created here across three countries, and the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve in particular shapes the profile.
The Bliesgau has been recognized as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since 2009. Orchards, extensive pastures with orchids, traditional agriculture – the region between Saarbrücken and the Palatinate border is one of Germany's most diverse cultural landscapes. At the Landmarkt, you will find exactly the products that this landscape yields: Bliesgau apple juice, honey from orchard beekeepers, goat cheese from the Mandelbachtal valley, game from the forestry office.
The date at the end of September is chosen deliberately: harvest time. On the tables, you'll find apples and pears from the orchards, pumpkins from the Bliesgau gardens, game from the autumn forests, fresh liqueurs, brandies, and new juice. A petting zoo with alpacas provides family entertainment, and the Saarpfalz district provides information material about the Biosphere Reserve at the information stand.
Homburg, with around 42,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of the Saarpfalz district. It is not only a university city (Uniklinik) and an industrial location but also boasts a respectable historic old town with a market square and Eisenbahnstraße – the perfect stage for a sophisticated farmers' market.
The market traditionally takes place on the fourth Saturday in September. Organizers are Saarpfalz-Touristik and the City of Homburg, sponsored by Stadtwerke Homburg. Saarpfalz-Touristik manages information stands about the Biosphere Reserve, and the Saarpfalz district's hunters are present with their nature mobile.
Exhibitors come from Saarland, the adjacent Rhineland-Palatinate (esp. Palatinate), and France.
