Beach Competition with Tradition

The Lubmin Sandcastle Competition is one of the most beautiful summer events in the seaside resort of Lubmin. For over a decade, the competition has gathered locals and holidaymakers on the beach between the pier and the promenade every year in early August. The spa administration organizes the event together with local beach rental operators and the local heritage association.

How the Competition Works

On the day of the event, building takes place from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Families, children's groups, groups of holiday friends, and even professional sand artists compete for the best sandcastle, the most imaginative sand palace, or the most original sculpture. An expert jury consisting of representatives from the spa administration, the tourism association, and local artists awards prizes for the best works in several categories (families, children, open category).

Local Context

The seaside resort of Lubmin is located in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, on the Greifswalder Bodden, a protected bay of the Baltic Sea. The approximately 2 km long fine sandy beach, the pier, and the spa park make Lubmin one of Vorpommern's most popular family resorts. The sandcastle competition fits perfectly with this character: a relaxed summer competition on the beach that primarily appeals to families.
