The Michaeli-Jahrmarkt owes its name to the feast day of Archangel Michael (29 September), a traditionally important date in Catholic Bavaria. Markets have been held in numerous Bavarian towns around this patron saint's day since the Middle Ages – the 'Michaeli' also marks the transition from summer to autumn farming.
