Traditional autumn market for St. Michael's Day
The Michaeli-Jahrmarkt owes its name to the feast day of Archangel Michael (29 September), a traditionally important date in Catholic Bavaria. Markets have been held in numerous Bavarian towns around this patron saint's day since the Middle Ages – the 'Michaeli' also marks the transition from summer to autumn farming. In Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, this market has survived to this day as a fixed date in the city calendar.
The venue is the spacious Volksfestplatz Neumarkt, the city's central event area on the edge of the city centre. Several major markets and folk festivals take place here throughout the year – the Easter Market in spring, the Neumarkt Folk Festival (Jura-Volksfest) in early summer, the Michaeli-Jahrmarkt in autumn, and the Christmas Market in Advent. The Michaeli-Jahrmarkt is a pure day market: a Sunday full of choice, bargains, and market bustle.
Traditionally, the Michaeli-Jahrmarkt is combined with Sunday opening hours in Neumarkt's city centre: the shops in the old town open their doors, making the market day a complete shopping and strolling experience. Bratwurst stands, ice cream cafés, and cafés round off the gastronomic offer.
Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz is a medium-sized town with around 41,000 inhabitants, located in the Franconian Jura between Nuremberg and Regensburg, in the state of Bavaria. As the largest town in the district of Neumarkt i.d.OPf., it is the economic, administrative, and market centre of the Middle Oberpfalz. The historic old town with its town hall, parish church, and remains of the city walls is a worthwhile additional destination on a market day.
On Sunday, October 11, 2026, the Michaeli-Jahrmarkt opens its stalls on the Volksfestplatz Neumarkt from 9 AM. Until late afternoon, market vendors offer household goods, textiles, leather, sweets, and plants, as well as regional specialities from the Oberpfalz.
Traditionally, Sunday opening hours in Neumarkt's city centre complement the market day: the shops in the historic old town also open, and cafés, bratwurst stands, and ice cream parlours invite visitors to linger.
The Michaeli-Jahrmarkt is one of the four major markets of the town of Neumarkt throughout the year and traditionally marks the beginning of the autumn season on the Volksfestplatz.
