Four weeks of culinary October in the Bavarian Enjoyment Town of Neumarkt
The Neumarkter Schmankerlwochen were launched in the early 1990s by the Neumarkt Tourism Association – in response to the tourist lull in early October. The idea of presenting regional gastronomy in a concerted month of action has become a long-standing successful format that is now an integral part of the culinary calendar of the Upper Palatinate.
Since 2017, Neumarkt has held the designation GenussOrt Bayern – an award from the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture for towns and communities with a special regional food culture. The designation requires demonstrable efforts in promoting regional food, traditional recipes, and the connection between producers and gastronomy. The Schmankerlwochen are the most prominent showcase of this commitment.
The model is simple and effective: Over 30 participating restaurants, inns, cafés, and hotels in the town of Neumarkt offer special menus throughout October – featuring regional ingredients from the Neumarkt district, the Jura region, and the wider Upper Palatinate. Each year, there is a thematic focus: specific ingredients (e.g., potatoes, game, mushrooms), historical recipes, or regional specialties such as Neumarkt potato dough or Juraschäuferla (a regional pork dish).
The list of participants is deliberately broad: from traditional taverns to upscale restaurants, from cafés with patisseries to hotel restaurants. The price range varies accordingly – from simple lunch menus under €20 to multi-course dinner menus with wine pairings over €80. The participating restaurateurs are coordinated by the Tourism Association; promotional brochures with the complete list of restaurants and their respective menus are available at the tourist office and online.
Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz is the district town of the Neumarkt district and is located at the intersection of Nuremberg and Regensburg in the Upper Palatinate Jura. With about 41,000 inhabitants, it is one of the economically strongest medium-sized towns in the Upper Palatinate. The Schmankerlwochen complement the year-round gastronomic offerings with the major highlight of autumn.
The 2026 edition marks the 36th anniversary of the Schmankerlwochen – a remarkable milestone for a format that holds a special place in the Bavarian culinary landscape. The conceptual core remains unchanged: an entire October month as a stage for regional food culture, driven by the self-initiative of the participating restaurateurs and coordinated by the Tourism Association.
The promotional brochure, press conferences, an official opening evening at the Reitstadel, and restaurant-specific advertising accompany the campaign. Visitors to Neumarkt in October have the rare opportunity to experience a large part of the local gastronomy in a curated event.
Neumarkt is located at the intersection of the A3 (Würzburg–Regensburg, Neumarkt exit) and the A93 (Regensburg–Hof, Velburg exit). By train via the Nuremberg–Regensburg line, with direct connections from both directions.
Promotional brochure with the complete list of restaurants and menus available from the end of September at the Neumarkt Tourist Office, online at www.tourismusverband-neumarkt.de/projekte/schmankerlwochen/. Reservations directly with the respective restaurant.
The Schmankerlwochen are not a central festival with an entrance fee, but an event in participating restaurants. Only the normal restaurant prices apply (with the respective Schmankerl menu).
