About Delicacy Weeks Neumarkt

The Neumarkter Schmankerlwochen are the most important culinary festival in the Upper Palatinate and will enter their 36th edition in 2026. For four weeks – throughout October – participating restaurants, inns, and cafés in the town of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz will be cooking special menus with regional ingredients and an annually changing thematic focus. Neumarkt holds the designation "GenussOrt Bayern" (Bavarian Enjoyment Town) – a state award for special regional food culture. The Schmankerlwochen are an expression and stage for this culinary identity.

36 Years of Schmankerlwochen — A Classic of the Upper Palatinate

The Neumarkter Schmankerlwochen were launched in the early 1990s by the Neumarkt Tourism Association – in response to the tourist lull in early October. The idea of presenting regional gastronomy in a concerted month of action has become a long-standing successful format that is now an integral part of the culinary calendar of the Upper Palatinate.

GenussOrt Bayern: The State Designation

Since 2017, Neumarkt has held the designation GenussOrt Bayern – an award from the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture for towns and communities with a special regional food culture. The designation requires demonstrable efforts in promoting regional food, traditional recipes, and the connection between producers and gastronomy. The Schmankerlwochen are the most prominent showcase of this commitment.

Format: Participating Restaurants Cook Special Menus

The model is simple and effective: Over 30 participating restaurants, inns, cafés, and hotels in the town of Neumarkt offer special menus throughout October – featuring regional ingredients from the Neumarkt district, the Jura region, and the wider Upper Palatinate. Each year, there is a thematic focus: specific ingredients (e.g., potatoes, game, mushrooms), historical recipes, or regional specialties such as Neumarkt potato dough or Juraschäuferla (a regional pork dish).

From Michelin-Starred Restaurants to Traditional Taverns

The list of participants is deliberately broad: from traditional taverns to upscale restaurants, from cafés with patisseries to hotel restaurants. The price range varies accordingly – from simple lunch menus under €20 to multi-course dinner menus with wine pairings over €80. The participating restaurateurs are coordinated by the Tourism Association; promotional brochures with the complete list of restaurants and their respective menus are available at the tourist office and online.

Neumarkt i.d.OPf. — The Culinary Centre of the Middle Upper Palatinate

Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz is the district town of the Neumarkt district and is located at the intersection of Nuremberg and Regensburg in the Upper Palatinate Jura. With about 41,000 inhabitants, it is one of the economically strongest medium-sized towns in the Upper Palatinate. The Schmankerlwochen complement the year-round gastronomic offerings with the major highlight of autumn.

Delicacy Weeks Neumarkt — edition 2026

The 36th Neumarkt Delicacy Weeks run throughout October 2026 – from October 1st to 31st. Over 30 participating restaurants, inns, and cafés in the town of Neumarkt i.d.OPf. offer special menus with regional ingredients. The theme for the year and the complete list of restaurants will be published by the Neumarkt Tourism Association at the end of September. Opening event in early October at the Reitstadel.

The 2026 edition marks the 36th anniversary of the Schmankerlwochen – a remarkable milestone for a format that holds a special place in the Bavarian culinary landscape. The conceptual core remains unchanged: an entire October month as a stage for regional food culture, driven by the self-initiative of the participating restaurateurs and coordinated by the Tourism Association.

The promotional brochure, press conferences, an official opening evening at the Reitstadel, and restaurant-specific advertising accompany the campaign. Visitors to Neumarkt in October have the rare opportunity to experience a large part of the local gastronomy in a curated event.
