Oftersheim — Palatinate Municipality on the Schwetzinger Hardt
The municipality of Oftersheim (around 11,800 inhabitants, Rhein-Neckar district) is located between Schwetzingen and Hockenheim in the Palatinate region, near the Schwetzinger Hardt — a large pine forest south of Mannheim. Culturally, the municipality belongs to the Palatinate with its typical customs: Fasching/Fasenacht (carnival), Kerwe (Kirchweih/church consecration festival), and a vibrant club life. The Oftersheimer Kerwe is the annual folk festival and one of the most important municipal events.
Kerwe — Palatinate Tradition
In most Palatinate municipalities, the Kerwe (short for Kerchweih = Kirchweih) dates back to the consecration of the local parish church and is celebrated with particular intensity in the Palatinate. Classic elements include:
- Kerweborscht — the young men (and today also women) who organize and symbolically accompany the festival
- Fassbieranstich — the official opening of the festival with a hammer and tapping the first barrel
- Kerwe-Beerdigung — the symbolic conclusion of the festival, where the "Kerwe" is "buried" as a figure before it "rises again" the following year
- Festival tent with live music, catering by local clubs, and amusement rides
Opening Saturday, October 17th, 2026, 3 PM
The festival opening takes place on Saturday, October 17th, 2026, at 3:00 PM with the barrel tapping in the schoolyard of the Friedrich-Ebert-Grundschule — Oftersheim's traditional festival grounds. The ceremony is accompanied by the Kerweborscht, who usher in the festival days with traditional hats, Kerweborscht songs, and some jokes. The mayor and the board of the Heimat- und Kulturkreis Oftersheim e.V. will be present at the tapping.
Program Saturday to Tuesday
The festival weekend spans four days:
- Saturday, October 17th, 2026: 3 PM festival opening with barrel tapping, festival tent program until late at night
- Sunday, October 18th, 2026: Morning pint (Frühschoppen), family afternoon with amusement rides, festival tent evening program
- Monday, October 19th, 2026: Festival tent open, often with a program for seniors in the afternoon and a club evening
- Tuesday, October 20th, 2026, 7:00 PM: Kerwe burial at Mannheimer Straße 59 — a solemn yet witty burial ceremony with a coffin, "funeral speeches" by the Kerweborscht, and the festival winding down
Kerwe Burial — The Symbolic Conclusion
The Kerwe burial is a typical Palatinate custom: The "Kerwe" is carried to the grave as a straw doll or figure in a coffin, accompanied by "mourning families" with black veils and black hats. The Kerweborscht deliver satirical and mournful speeches about the transience of the festival and promise resurrection the following year. A humorous, solemn ceremony with great local significance — the burial at Mannheimer Str. 59 has been the fixed closing point for years.
