Over 20 historic wooden boats under red-brown sails on the Bodden
The Zeesboote are the historic sailing boats of the Bodden fishermen on the southern Baltic Sea coast. With their characteristic red-brown sails — dyed with ox blood and birch bark for waterproofing — and their low hull, they are perfectly suited for the shallow, protected Bodden waters. Today, the lovingly preserved wooden boats — most of them over a hundred years old — are maintained as regatta and family boats. The Zeesenbootregatta Dierhagen is one of the biggest opportunities to see them all together in action.
The regatta starts from the Water Sports Harbor Dierhagen Dorf and is held as part of the Dierhagen Harbor Days. Over twenty Zeesboote set off every year, with the course running on the Saaler Bodden off the coast. Both the start and finish can be well observed from the jetty — the red-brown sails in the Bodden wind are a photographic motif that graces entire annual calendars.
While the regatta is underway on the water, a classic harbor festival takes place on the shore: Pirate Festival and Children's Barrel-Stave-Knocking for the little ones, Food Mile with regional specialties, Market Stalls with arts and crafts and souvenirs, a model boat course for hobby model builders, and live broadcast of the regatta on a screen from the water. The moderation is traditionally hosted by Beate Kollhoff. The award ceremony takes place in the late afternoon.
Dierhagen is located at the western entrance to the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in the Vorpommern-Rügen district (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). The region is the traditional home of the Zeesboote — in addition to Dierhagen, Zeesboot regattas also take place in Ahrenshoop, Bodstedt, and Wieck. A whole season of Bodden regattas attracts tradition-conscious sailing friends to the coast.
The 2026 edition follows the proven program structure: 12:00 PM Helmsmen's Briefing, 1:00 PM Regatta Start. Over twenty Zeesboote will set sail with their red-brown sails on the Saaler Bodden; most are over a hundred years old and are lovingly maintained by their owners.
On the shore, a classic harbor festival runs in parallel: Pirate Festival with Children's Barrel-Stave-Knocking for the little ones, Food Mile, Market and Fairground Stalls, Model Boat Course. From 2:00 PM, a screen will broadcast the regatta from the water, with moderation traditionally by Beate Kollhoff. The Award Ceremony will take place around 5:00 PM — the ranking depends on the start mode and finish and will be announced during the event.
