75 years of the Schwetzinger Festival — one of Germany's oldest classical festivals

Founded in 1952 by the then Süddeutscher Rundfunk in the historic rooms of Schwetzingen Castle, the Schwetzinger SWR Festival is now one of Europe's most traditional music festivals. The 2026 edition runs from April 24 to May 23 under the motto “Show Your Stance!” — reflecting societal and artistic positioning in a polarized time.

Opening: Premiere of “Malina”

The opening day features the premiere of the opera “Malina” — a composition by Karola Obermüller and Peter Gilbert based on Ingeborg Bachmann's novel of the same name. Bachmann's 1971 novel is considered one of the most important works of Austrian post-war literature and has never been adapted for opera before. The Schwetzingen premiere is a central musical event in the German-speaking opera landscape in 2026.

Monteverdi, Strauss, and the Resident Artists

Further highlights of the 2026 festival program include Claudio Monteverdi's early Baroque opera “L'Orfeo” (1607) — one of the earliest operatic works in music history — and Johann Strauss's “Die Fledermaus” as a contribution to the operetta tradition. The 2026 Resident Artists are Dorothee Oberlinger (recorder), Sophie Pacini (piano), Jörg Halubek (conductor), and the Signum Quartet — all with their own concert projects spread across the four festival weeks.

Rococo Theatre and Mozart Hall — Historic Halls

The festival uses the historic halls of Schwetzingen Castle: the Rococo Theatre, one of the few surviving 18th-century court theatres in Europe — Mozart himself performed here in 1763 as a seven-year-old prodigy —, the magnificent Mozart Hall with its baroque acoustics, plus the palace gardens for chamber music outdoor concerts and the Hunting Hall foyer. The spaces carry history and create a sound experience that cannot be reproduced in modern concert halls.

Four Weeks of Chamber and Vocal Concerts

Throughout the four weeks, there is a dense program of chamber concerts, vocal concerts, song recitals, workshops, and festival symposia. Prominent guest artists include Thomas Dunford (lute) and mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre. Young artists also get a stage — the festival has always seen itself as a bridge between tradition and the avant-garde.

Schwetzingen and the Castle

The town of Schwetzingen, with around 22,000 inhabitants, is located in the Rhein-Neckar district between Heidelberg and Mannheim. The castle was the summer residence of the Electors Palatine and, with its famous palace gardens, is one of Germany's most beautiful Baroque-Rococo residences. UNESCO is considering the castle for its World Heritage list. The town combines culinary tradition (Schwetzinger asparagus!) with high culture — a top-tier festival destination.
