About Viehscheid Schöllang

The Viehscheid in Schöllang, a district of Oberstdorf in the Oberallgäu, is one of the most traditional cattle drives in the region. When the summer grazing on the mountains ends in September, the herdsmen drive the cattle from the surrounding Alps – including Entschenalpe, Seealpe, Gutenalpe, and Käseralpe – down into the valley to the Viehscheidplatz Schöllang. Around 600 animals return after an accident-free summer grazing season, adorned with bells and headwear. At the Viehscheidplatz, the animals are allocated to their owners, accompanied by a lively festival with the Musikkapelle Schöllang and the Rubihorn Musikanten in the festival tent. The Viehscheid is living Allgäu tradition and an impressive experience for locals and guests.

Cattle Drive in the Allgäu

The Viehscheid marks the end of the summer grazing period – those months when the cattle graze on the high mountain pastures. In Schöllang, a district of the market town of Oberstdorf, this custom is particularly traditionally maintained. When the animals return from the Alps such as Entschenalpe, Seealpe, Gutenalpe, and Käseralpe to the valley, it is a highlight of the Allgäu year.

The Festive Arrival

Around 600 animals parade to the Viehscheidplatz. If the herd has survived the summer without mishap, the animals return festively adorned with bells and elaborate headwear – a symbol deeply rooted in tradition. At the Viehscheidplatz, the animals are allocated ("divided") among their owners.

Festival Operations and Music

The Viehscheid is accompanied by lively festival operations. The Musikkapelle Schöllang and the Rubihorn Musikanten provide the Allgäu atmosphere in the festival tent. Delicacies, beer, and conviviality round off the celebration.

Two Cattle Drives in Oberstdorf

A few days after the Viehscheid in Schöllang, another Viehscheid takes place in Oberstdorf itself – visitors thus have two opportunities to experience this traditional Allgäu custom.
