Six midsummer holiday Wednesdays with magic, clowning, and music for children at Adolph-Kolping-Platz
The Klamauk series — its full, affectionate name is "Klamauk unterm Schirm" (roughly: "Ruckus Under the Umbrella") — is an established summer tradition in the town of Völklingen. Spread over the six weeks of the Saarland summer holidays, a total of six performances take place on Wednesday afternoons at 3 PM. Venue: Adolph-Kolping-Platz behind the Old Town Hall, right in the city centre.
The programme is diverse and aimed at children aged approximately three to twelve. On stage are magicians, clowns, musicians, acrobats, and theatre groups — all from Saarland, the greater region, or the wider German-speaking area. Each performance lasts about an hour, is age-appropriately structured, and often includes interactive elements: children are invited onto the stage, clap along, sing along, and help with the magic tricks.
Six different acts make up the programme for the 2026 summer holidays:
Klamauk unterm Schirm is consistently free of charge. The town of Völklingen, the Cultural Office, and the main sponsor, Volksbank Westliche Saar, ensure that every family can participate in the summer programme — regardless of their financial situation. This accessibility is programmatic and part of its ethos.
Adolph-Kolping-Platz is located in the centre of Völklingen, behind the Old Town Hall. It's a closed, quiet urban square ideal for families: close to the city centre with cafés and ice cream parlours, easily accessible by bus and train, and shaded by surrounding trees. In case of rain, performances are cancelled without replacement — the name "Klamauk unterm Schirm" is more of a joke.
Völklingen is situated in the Saarbrücken Regional Association in western Saarland, about ten kilometres west of the state capital. With the Völklingen Ironworks (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the town has an internationally renowned landmark — but Klamauk showcases the lively, everyday, family-friendly side of the former industrial city. Those who live in Völklingen with children know the programme; those from the surrounding area appreciate it as a valuable summer tradition.
