Germany's leading Ganesh Chaturthi Festival in Neukölln
Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most important Hindu festivals – the elephant-headed god Ganesha is considered the remover of obstacles and the patron of beginnings. The festival, celebrated with enormous participation in India, particularly in Maharashtra and Mumbai, is based on a twelve-day cycle of rituals, beginning with the ceremonial installation of a Ganesha murti (statue) and ending with its visarjan (water ceremony).
In recent years, the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple in Hasenheide, Neukölln, has established Germany's largest Ganesh Chaturthi celebration. Twelve days of packed programming: daily Pujas, traditional Aratis, cultural performances from the classical Indian repertoire (Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Mridangam, classical singing), workshops on yoga, mantras, and Indian cuisine. Families from Berlin's Indian community are just as welcome as non-Hindu guests who want to get to know the festival.
The highlight is the Grand Visarjan Miravnuk on September 26, 2026: a procession with the Ganesha statue, traditional drummers, and dancers from the Indian community, moving through Neukölln. The statue is symbolically handed over to the water – an act that marks the end of the festival and bids farewell to Ganesha until next year.
